Film featuring Antique’s Mararison Island wins award in WV film festival
SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique, Dec. 19 (PNA) -- Mararison Island, one of the three island barangays in the town of Culasi, was featured in the Western Visayas CineKasimanwa Film Festival through the live action film entitled “Isla†(Island).
'Isla' was a short film by Jonathan Jurilla, an Associate Professor from the University of the Philippines in the Visayas-Miago campus. He is also a photojournalist who spends most of his free time in the province of Antique, particularly in the island of Mararison.
It was cited “for using film medium as an effective tool in promoting film tourism without mention of locations, capitalizing on the beauty and grandeur of the island using apt camerawork that made audiences feel they are part of the journey of the characters.â€
The film that was made in corroboration with other UP professors Emmanuel Lerona and Ruperto Quitag as cinematographers, won the special jury prize for tourism.
'Isla' is my first live action film. This year, I only wanted to prove to myself that I can do live action filmmaking other than doing animation and video documentaries,†said Jurilla as he received the award last night, December 18.
It was premiered along with two other short films by Ilonggo directors last December 14 at the Cinema One of Shoemart (SM) City, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
Jurilla’s Isla, during the said premier readily caught the retina out of the eye of the viewers because of its fresh cinematography and unpretentious linear narrative.
The film’s two main characters were Dimple Rios and Lyn Holy La Vega.
“The film showcased three different tourist attractions of a selected province (Antique) and since the biggest sponsor was the Department of Tourism, I wrote a film that could satisfy their demand. The reward is proof that 'Isla' has met that objective,†Jurilla said in a text message.
Other minor sponsors included the 'Kalye Viajero' (street travelers) a blog, Dayaw Multimedia and UPV.
He furthered that “receiving this special prize is more that I could ask for. All I ever wished was to get 'Isla' showcased in this year’s Cinekasimanwa Western Visayas Film Festival and this recognition is a big bonus.†(PNA)
