Dynamite explosion kills Ilocos Sur fisherman
SAN JUAN, Ilocos Sur, March 2 (PNA) -- A fisherman was killed when a lighted improvised dynamite he was using in illegal fishing prematurely exploded along the shoreline in Barangay Sumgait, San Juan, Ilocos Sur.
A report reaching the San Juan Police Station late Wednesday identified the fatality as one Gladlee Ford Vitamog, 31, a resident of Barangay Dardarat, San Juan, Ilocos Sur.
Investigation conducted by the police showed that Vitamog was alone on board a raft while he was doing illegal fishing along the shoreline.
A witness named Samuel Asuncion revealed that he saw the victim on the shoreline standing on a bamboo raft, afterwhich, he heard an explosion believed to be from an improvised dynamite used in fishing locally called "bong-bong".
He further noticed that the victim fell off from the bamboo raft, prompting him to seek help from the neighborhood.
Victim Vitamog was already dead when rescuers retrieved his body from the water. He sustained multiple blast injuries causing his instantaneous death.
The incident is now under investigation by the local police. (PNA)
