CEBU City Mayor Michael Rama believes setting up a
coal-fired power plant in the heart of the South Road Properties (SRP) will not affect its marketability.
Like Rep. Tomas Osmeña (Cebu City, south district), Rama welcomed the proposal of investors to set up a coal-fired power plant at the 290-hectare property, in order to address power supply problems in Metro Cebu.
The mayor, however, has yet to receive an official communication from the investors.
Rama said there are technologies that can help ease the effects of the plant, such as the coal ash, which environmentalists have warned is harmful to the environment.
“I don’t think it is going to affect (the marketability of SRP.) There are many gadgets now, many technologies that are available that can address such worries and concerns (on the environment),†the mayor said in a news conference.
This is proven, Rama said, by coal-fired power plants in other countries like Taiwan,
which are nestled in manufacturing and commercial centers.
“The trend now is for power plants that can be put anywhere for as long as all requirements in terms of safety, security, health, etc. are being strictly handled,†he said.
At the Provincial Board (PB), two members said the solution to power supply gaps is to invite more power generating companies to Cebu.
