Coal-fired Power Plant in Iloilo City
« on: June 17, 2010, 07:38:44 AM »
Outgoing Iloilo city mayor Jerry Treñas said that the definite solution to the power crisis hounding the city is at hand.

Treñas said that the first commercially viable coal-fired power plant in Western Visayas will be operational by September this year.

He said that coal fired power plant will augment the increasing power needs of the city especially that more investments are in store within the coming years. The mayor also said that national business players are currently monitoring the city’s capacity to provide enough power for their growing economic activity.

Treñas admitted that investors, particularly from the business processing and outsourcing (BPO) industry are hesitant to put up call centers in Iloilo City due to the frequent power outages.

These call centers could eat up a large chunk of power during peak hours and could not afford to loss power while serving clients abroad, he said.

The coal fired power plant is expected to generate 164 megawatts and located in a 24-hectare site at Brgy. Ingore, La Paz, Iloilo City. The power plant is owned by the Global Business Power Corp. and costs P16 billion. - PNA
