Bomb scare rocks Dagupan, but no IED found
DAGUPAN CITY, Jan 3 (PNA) -- A bomb scare rocked the city at past 8 p.m. Monday (Jan. 2) when a box believed to be an improvised explosive device (IED) was found in front of Paseo de Belen, a nightly crowd-drawer in the city beside the Judge Jose R. de Venecia Sr. Expressway.
This caused panic among residents especially after the incident was posted in social media, even as police had yet to verify on whether the box contained an IED.
After the box was isolated and inspected, police said no IED was found inside, said Supt. Neil Miro, police chief of Dagupan City.
"There was no IED, only a suspected EID as this turned out to be just a mere empty box," Miro said.
The Dagupan Police acted swiftly by closing the entire stretch of De Venecia Expressway aside from preventing persons from entering the site while awaiting the result of the inspection conducted by an IED team.
More police will be deployed at the Paseo de Belen until Jan. 7, Miro said.
He also advised against spreading unverified reports that would cause panic among residents. (PNA)
