BFP warns GenSan residents vs fires as summer season nearsGENERAL SANTOS CITY, March 2 (PNA) -- The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) here urged residents to be extra cautious against the possible occurrence of fire-related incidents due to the approaching summer season.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Allan Rey Imperio, chief investigator of the BFP station here, said Thursday the onset of warm weather in the area could trigger structural and grass fires if not given proper attention by residents.
"This March, with summer time almost here, our surroundings are expected to be warmer than usual and this makes our communities more vulnerable to fire incidents," he said.
BFP personnel here launched a series of awareness campaigns on Wednesday, March 1, in line with the observance of the Fire Prevention Month.
Since January, a total of 13 fire incidents had been recorded in the city that left nearly P1 million in damages.
Most of the cases, especially the structural fires, were found to be caused by faulty electrical connections.
Seven houses were gutted down in separate fire incidents at Natividad Street in Barangay Lagao and in Block 11, Phase 2 of Barangay Bula on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively.
Imperio said residents should regularly check electrical connections in their houses and other structural properties, and seek immediate intervention if they notice any problem.
He said they should also check for possible stored or piled materials like papers, cartons and cloth that could easily catch fires.
The official advised residents to be more responsible in disposing lit cigarettes and avoid throwing them in grassy areas as they could cause grass fires.
The city recorded major grass fires these past years that affected communities and the operations of the city airport.
Meanwhile, in line with the observance of the Fire Prevention Month, BFP Region 12 enjoined government and private offices and other stakeholders to participate in their month-long fire safety information campaigns.
This year's theme is: "Buhay at Ari-arian ay Pahalagahan, Ibayong Pag-iingat sa Sunog ay sa Pamamahay Simulan."
Fire Sr. Supt. Louie Puracan, BFP-12 regional director, said the event mainly aims to influence the public to take into serious consideration various measures on fire safety at homes, businesses and offices.
Aside from the awareness campaigns, he said they posted advocacy posters in local fire stations, and various government and private establishments. (PNA)
