168 drug surrenderers in Negros Occidental complete community-based rehab

BACOLOD CITY, March 9 (PNA) -- A total of 168 drug surrenders in Negros Occidental completed the community-based rehabilitation program initiated by the provincial government with the Philippine Army.

This was listed in the accomplishments of the Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC) reported Thursday as part of the province’s initiative to support the war on drugs of the Duterte administration.

Late last year, the provincial government organized a series of wellness camps with the 303rd Infantry Brigade attended by moderate drug users from various cities and municipalities who surrendered through the Oplan Tokhang of the Philippine National Police.

The four wellness camps were held in August, September, November and December.

The surrenderers came from the cities of Bago, Escalante, Himamaylan, Kabankalan, La Carlota, San Carlos, Silay, and Sipalay and the municipalities of Calatrava, Cauayan, Hinigaran, Ilog, Isabela, Manapla, Murcia, and Pontevedra.

Records showed the youngest participant was a 12-year-old boy while the eldest was a 47-year-old.

The modules of the week-long wellness camps include leadership training, physical tasks, spiritual activities, counseling, lectures, skills and entrepreneurial training.

Some of the participants were able to obtain scholarships from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

The report also said that PADAC supported and provided assistance to various cities and municipalities for their localized community-based rehabilitation program.

These were Cadiz, Sagay, Kabankalan, Victorias, Silay, San Carlos, Murcia, and Ilog.

Bacolod City also patterned its own community-based rehabilitation program from the provincial model, the report said.

For this year, the technical working group has yet to convene to identify the drug surrenderers who will undergo the rehabilitation program, which would be the initial batch, said Provincial Planning and Development Coordinator Ma. Lina Sanogal, action officer of PADAC.

The provincial government has allotted P5 million for drug rehabilitation this year. Additional allocation will also be sourced from the Capitol’s P5 million peace and order fund. (PNA)
