It's worth noting that The Satanic Temple is the same group that organized a "pink mass" over the grave of a Westboro Baptist Church leader's mother last July, with the intent of turning her "gay for all eternity"—a clear jab at Westboro's threats to protest funerals for Boston Marathon victims, as well as the host of other offensive actions the church has taken.
The Kansas-based Westboro group has picketed LGBT events, with children holding hateful signs bearing anti-gay slurs, and attended funerals for the dead to harass the grieving with its wing-nut ideology.
The American Civil Liberties Union was awestruck by the "self-evidently exclusive" Ten Commandments monument approved by the state legislature in 2009 and filed a lawsuit in August 2013. The ACLU argues that because the statue is the only one of its kind on the north lawn, it “supports and endorses the faiths and creeds of some churches and sects.â€
The Satanic Temple believes that placing another statue by that monument would allay the ACLU’s concerns.
"By accepting our offer, the good people of Oklahoma City will have the opportunity to show that they espouse the basic freedoms spelled out in the Constitution," the group writes on its campaign page.
"We imagine that the ACLU will also embrace such a response. Allowing us to donate a monument would show that the Oklahoma City Council does not discriminate, and both the religious and non-religious should be happy with such an outcome. Our mission is to bring people together by finding common sentiments that create solutions that everyone can appreciate and enjoy."
