Satanists Raise $20K to Erect a Devil Statue Next to the Ten Commandments
Their horned goat would share land with Oklahoma's biblical monument.

If Christians can construct a monument to the Ten Commandments on the lawn of the Oklahoma State Capitol, why can't Satanists erect a statue of a horned goat ensconced on his pentagram-adorned throne, ready to counsel the children who seek his advice?

At least, that's what The Satanic Temple is asking.

The New York-based Satanist group revealed the designs for its not-so-subtle statue—a "goat-headed Baphomet," to be exact—on Tuesday and has already exceeded its $20,000 fundraising goal in an Indiegogo campaign to establish a monument to "complement and contrast" the Ten Commandments monument that sits on the lawn.

It's worth noting that The Satanic Temple is the same group that organized a "pink mass" over the grave of a Westboro Baptist Church leader's mother last July, with the intent of turning her "gay for all eternity"—a clear jab at Westboro's threats to protest funerals for Boston Marathon victims, as well as the host of other offensive actions the church has taken.

The Kansas-based Westboro group has picketed LGBT events, with children holding hateful signs bearing anti-gay slurs, and attended funerals for the dead to harass the grieving with its wing-nut ideology.

The American Civil Liberties Union was awestruck by the "self-evidently exclusive" Ten Commandments monument approved by the state legislature in 2009 and filed a lawsuit in August 2013. The ACLU argues that because the statue is the only one of its kind on the north lawn, it “supports and endorses the faiths and creeds of some churches and sects.”

The Satanic Temple believes that placing another statue by that monument would allay the ACLU’s concerns.

"By accepting our offer, the good people of Oklahoma City will have the opportunity to show that they espouse the basic freedoms spelled out in the Constitution," the group writes on its campaign page.

"We imagine that the ACLU will also embrace such a response. Allowing us to donate a monument would show that the Oklahoma City Council does not discriminate, and both the religious and non-religious should be happy with such an outcome. Our mission is to bring people together by finding common sentiments that create solutions that everyone can appreciate and enjoy."

The Satanic group isn't so much an organized religious body filled with rites and rituals as it is a rabble-rousing crew of political activists who see Satan as a "literary construct" as opposed to a real, hoofed figure.

Oklahoma lawmakers don't think the statue will fly in a heavily religious state where nearly 70 percent of the population is Christian.

"Any monument displayed on state property should reflect the values of Oklahoma or memorialize those who built or defended our freedom," Rep. Bob Cleveland told CNN on Tuesday. "In my opinion this Satanist monument does not meet with the values of Oklahomans."

Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves argues the statue reflects the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and throughout the state and would serve as a monument to their beliefs. It could be used for other purposes too.

"The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation," Greaves said in a statement.

No new monuments can be placed on the lawn until the lawsuit is settled, but The Satanic Temple better watch out: PETA, a Hindu group and the elusive Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster have all requested a spot near the Capitol, too.
