Boodle Fight: A Unique Filipino Dining Experience

Boodle fight may sound like something a soldier would use during combat but it is actually a Filipino style of eating. We would often see this on the news when a politician visits a military base or after joint military exercises. In a normal meal, food is served on separate dishes but in a boodle fight, everything is laid out on a giant banana leaf for everyone to feast on. Another thing that makes boodle fight truly Filipino is the use bare hands in place of utensils.

If you want to have this unique Filipino experience, check out these restaurants in Metro Manila:

House of Pugon

This restaurant along White Plains, Quezon City offers Filipino dishes like pugon-baked Lechon Sisig and Bistek Tagalog. House of Pugon currently has two set meals in their Boodle Series which are Hapag Marangle (Farm Feast) or Abak Maranun (Kapangpangan Breakfast). Each set meal is good for four to five people and comes with sagot’ gulaman.

Gerry’s Jeepney

When you visit Gerry’s Jeepney, you’ll feel like you have just stepped inside a jeepney. Their decorations include colorful banderitas and common jeepney signage like “Basta driver, sweet lover” or “Makalimutan na ang lahat, wag lang ang bayad.” Customers can also enjoy a round or two dama or sungka while waiting for their orders. This restaurant has a sink nearby so you and your friends can wash your hands before digging into the mountain of food. These group meals are named after places in Metro Manila namely Monumento, Cubao, and Ayala. These can feed as few as four people to as many as eight hungry customers.

but is this truly filipino?  i thought this is more subcontinental south asian.  meanwhile, most of our neighbors in southeast asia use chopsticks.  what's filipino is the use of a spoon instead of a table knife.  eating with bare hands during picnics on the beach, probably.
