Philippine Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap has announced the planned import by local producers and traders of some three million kilos of chicken in the last quarter of 2007 to meet demand for the product.
In an interview at the Koresko Hotel here, Yap said stakeholders recently agreed to bring in chicken imports, which are expected to arrive on or before November of this year.
The volume, he said, is not even one per cent of the country's annual chicken consumption of 450 million heads.
The sector imported about three to five million kilos from December 2006 to January 2007 as they expected an increase in demand for the holiday season.
