The Supreme Court has censured Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago for using “offensive and disrespectful†language directed at the Supreme Court in a privilege speech she delivered at the Senate in December 2006.
“I would rather be in another environment but not in the
Supreme Court of idiots,†Santiago had said in her speech which she delivered after the Judicial and Bar Council dropped non-Supreme Court justices, including her, from being considered for the post of Chief Justice.
The high court said that Santiago violated Canon Eight and Canon 11 of the Code of Professional Responsibility which enjoins lawyers from using abusive and offensive language and from disrespecting the courts and judicial officers.
“The court wishes to express its deep concern about the language Senator Santiago, a member of the bar, used in her speech and its effects on the administration of justice,†the court said.
