Wuppertal, a mixture of outgoing metropolis and cosy village richly adorned with stucco facades and handsome half- timbered houses, offers interesting surprises: a total of 8,723 It has a population of 360,000. The birthplace of Friedrich Engels a German social scientist and philosopher, who developed communist theory alongside his better-known collaborator, Karl Marx, co-authoring The Communist Manifesto (1848). Engels also edited the second and third volumes of Das Kapital after Marx's death. The home of Bayer chemicals ( Aspirin), the first concentration camp was built here. I´m banging my head, I can´t follow the guidelines of Inday Hazel, bolok gajud kining akong utok brain. Please google the Schwebebahn. I will try to post more about Wuppertal which is very rich in history and culture. One that is worth mentioning is the Barmer Erklaerung ( Barmen Communique) that expresses the separation of the church and the state, and that during NS (National Socialism with Adolf HItler as the godfather) regime, the Protestant religion abhors the politics of the this era 1934. Title: Re: Wuppertal, my second home! Post by: hofelina on October 13, 2008, 02:51:34 PM The Schwebebahn ( Picture comes later),
The Wuppertal Schwebebahn is a suspension railway in Wuppertal, Germany. Its full name is the “Eugen Langen Monorail Suspension Railway” (Einschienige Hängebahn System Eugen Langen). Designed by Eugen Langen, who originally planned to build it in Berlin, it was built in 1900, opened in 1901 and is still in use today as a local transport system in the city. It is the oldest monorail system in the world. The suspension railway travels along a route 13.3 kilometres long, about 12 metres above the surface of the river Wupper between Oberbarmen and Sonnborner Straße[1] (10 km[2]) and approximately 8 m above the city streets, between Sonnborner Straße and Vohwinkel[1] (3.3 km).[2] At one point the railway crosses the A46 motorway. The entire trip takes about 30 minutes.[2] 75,000 commuters uses this means of transportations during working days. Title: Re: Wuppertal, my second home! Born: 28 November 1820 Birthplace: Barmen,Wuppertal Germany Died: 5 August 1895 (cancer) Best Known As: Karl Marx's collaborator and editor Friedrich Engels moved from Germany to England in 1842, where he worked as a manager in a factory. In 1845 he published The Condition of the Working Class in England, which suggested that the poor working class would only benefit if they fought for socialism. Engels had met Karl Marx in 1844 and together they wrote the Communist Manifesto, predicting ultimate victory for the proletariat. After 1848 Engels returned to England and financially supported Marx, whose works he also edited and translated. Post by: hofelina on November 11, 2008, 03:22:09 PM Military History Companion: Friedrich Engels
Engels, Friedrich (1820-95), political economist, military writer, and theorist; friend, colleague, and adviser of Karl Marx; and founder of communism. Born at Wuppertal on 28 November 1820, he began writing political tracts in 1839. In November 1842 he visited Manchester in Britain and became a member of the Chartist movement, and first met Marx in Paris in 1844. His experiences led to writing The Situation of the Working Class in Britain (1844-5) and, in turn, The Communist Manifesto (1848). Further experience of the 1848-50 revolutions in Europe and particularly in Germany led to the writing of Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Germany (1851-2). In 1850 he returned to Manchester where he worked in a commercial firm, partly to subsidize Marx. In 1870 Marx and Engels attended the Congress of the First International in London. In 1871 Engels welcomed the Paris Commune, fitting it into his view of progress through capitalism towards a dictatorship of the proletariat. After Marx's death in 1883, Engels completed and published the unfinished second and third volumes of Das Kapital. Engels was an expert analyst of military affairs and, in particular, of the mid-19th-century revolution in military affairs and the role of industry and arms manufacture. Marx considered that he had ‘made the study of military questions his speciality’. Many of the articles attributed to Marx owe much to Engels. Their division of interest was fairly clear cut, Marx studying the political essence of wars and their character, Engels, the material basis of military affairs and the nature and origin of wars and armies. Engels's detailed study of military affairs was fired by the Crimean and American civil wars, although much of his military analysis dates from later life. He realized that future wars between major powers would be total war, and would depend to an unprecedented degree on technology which, in turn, depended on a nation's industrial base. In 1892 he wrote ‘from the moment warfare became a branch of the grande industries (ironclad ships, rifled artillery, quickfiring and repeating cannon, repeating rifles, steel covered bullets, smokeless powder, etc.) la grande industrie, without which all these things cannot be made, became a political necessity’. In a letter of 1888 he prophesied the nature of war accurately enough. ‘No war is any longer possible for Prussia-Germany except a world war, and a war of an extension and violence hitherto undreamt of.’ The study of war could not be extracted from its political economic and diplomatic context—as he wrote, ‘diplomacy is higher than strategy’. Engels's views on the military revolution taking place at the time were sound enough, but hardly unique, and he would probably not have gone down in history as a great military thinker and analyst were it not for his friend Marx. It is questionable whether either of them would be remembered today had their work not been taken up by Lenin. But for the study of the 19th-century revolution in warfare his work is important. — Christopher Bellamy Title: Re: Wuppertal, my second home! Post by: hofelina on December 16, 2008, 08:33:04 PM Welcome to the University of Wuppertal
Founded in 1972, the University of Wuppertal (UW) is still young. Its twin goals are academic excellence in its individual disciplines and the consistent development of the interface between these disciplines and the world of practical experience – in a word, the transfer of knowledge and technological know-how. With a combination of disciplines that is somewhat unconventional for a German university, UW offers interesting possibilities – for example in subject combinations for teaching degrees, in interdisciplinary cooperations between the Faculties of Engineering and Economics, or in the field of Safety Engineering, where UW's degree program is unique in Germany. The university's reputation as a force in business and industry goes beyond its role in regional economics. Its business startup and marketing program provides young entrepreneurs with a first class springboard that once again in 2007 – as in 2005 – won Wuppertal number one position in the German university rankings. A star attraction overlooking the town The Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal, one of the most remarkable concert halls and conference centres in Europe and a member of the Historic Con- ference Centres of Europe (HCCE), looks down over the town from a green hillside. There is nowhere else quite like it in Germany. It was built in 1900 in the magnificent, opulent style characteristic of the period of Emperor William II and reopened in 1995 after masterly renovation, with the result that its original splendour and unique acoustics are now combined with state-of-the-art technical equipment. Take a look at the sheer beauty and numerous possibilities offered by this marvellous building. Welcome. Post by: hofelina on December 19, 2008, 11:35:56 PM The Müngsten Bridge is the highest steel railroad bridge in Germany. The bridge is 107 metres (350 ft) high and spans the valley of the river Wupper, connecting the cities of Remscheid and Solingen. This stretch is part of railroad route nr. 458 between Wuppertal and Solingen, used exclusive by line RB 47, aka "the Muengstener". Originally the building was named Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke (Emperor Wilhelm Bridge) to honour Emperor Wilhelm I. After the end of the monarchy the bridge was named after the close settlement Müngsten, which is close to the city limits of Solingen, Remscheid and Wuppertal. Today, the settlement no longer exists, so Müngsten is simply a landmark.

ps Belle/and friends try to come on 2014 to Aachen because of the Heiligtum European Pilgrimage Site This urban development had been augmented not only by the abundant water resources of the Aachen Basin, commerce in textiles and the working of brass and copper, but above all by the European pilgrimages to Aachen’s renowned sacred relics: the robe of Mary, the swaddling clothes and loincloth of Jesus, and the decapitation cloth of John the Baptist. This display of sacred objects from Charlemagne’s treasury of relics made Aachen a cynosure for pilgrims: they came primarily from the Balkans - Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia - but also from Poland and Bohemia, as well as the North Sea and Baltic regions. Aachen developed into the most important pilgrims’ shrine north of the Alps, and was frequently also used as a collecting-point or stopping-place en route to Santiago di Compostela. From the time of the great mid-fourteenth century plague, the solemn exhibition of the costly relics was carried out in prescribed sequence and repeated every seven years (cf the ‘Aachen Sabbath Year’). In the interim, the objects of veneration were kept in the Shrine of Our Lady, a masterpiece crafted in 1238 by Aachen’s goldsmiths. I was able to see this last year. This event is every 7 years. You could see the materials morag katsa, you could reflect their humble apparel, and our present ways. Universities in Germany are using E-chalks, The electronic chalkboard combines all the advantages of a traditional chalkboard with the functionality of a modern distance education tool. The lecturer writes on the electronic board, seamlessly integrating pictures and interactive programs from the web. Both can be loaded directly from the harddisk or the Internet. E-Chalk also includes algebraic formula manipulation, together with function plotting via handwriting recognition. The lecture can be followed at the lecture room or remotely through the web. Only a browser is needed to receive the audio, video, and the board image. All lectures are stored on a server for viewing on demand. E-Chalk also generates a printable version of the board (PDF) so that students do not have to copy the board content any more. Advantages of the system The chalkboard has proven to be a superior teaching tool over the years. Its contrast is good, even in large lecture rooms. The lecturer has to think aloud while writing on the board. So the students have enough time to understand an idea or formula, ask questions and reflect on the contents of the lecture. Using slides, the lecturer tends to proceed too fast and overwhelms the students. E-chalk is therefore just a chalkboard, but a state of the art one, that combines the traditional advantages of chalk with the interactivity of distance eduation software. If you look sharp you see that there are neither tracks nor catenary wire for this tramway. This is because the last tramway line in Wuppertal has been abandoned some twenty years ago. On behalf of the annual state festival of Northrhine Westphalia this historic streetcar has been set up under the Sonnborn viaduct. The idea was to replicate a historic scene which is documented on picture postcards from the early 20th century which show four different means of transportation in one image: A car of Wuppertal's unique suspension monorail, a tramway car, a steam powered train and an airship. In the morning of the first festival day police cars spoiled the scene but gave an interesting contrast to the old streetcar which is preserved in a traction museum nearby. Post by: hofelina on March 07, 2009, 03:48:49 AM Inday Pinangga maayo kay naka-abot ka sa Maulbronn!
Founded in 1838, it emerged from a settlement, built about a monastery, which belonged to the Neckar Community in the Kingdom of Württemberg. In 1886, Maulbronn officially became a city and was an administrative center until 1938. The return of many displaced persons following the Second World War significantly raised the city's population. Of particular note is the city's monastery, Maulbronn Abbey, which features prominently in Hermann Hesse's novel, Beneath the Wheel. The formerly Cistercian monastery has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Legend has it that the city was founded by monks who followed a mule to valley with a source of clean water. The valley was also blessed with large deposits of soft sandstone for building. The monks built the original abbey and erected a fountain to honor the mule. The cities name means mule fountain. Title: Re: Wuppertal, My Second Home! Post by: hofelina on May 17, 2009, 12:45:11 AM This afternoon, we have had a Filipino Catholic mass in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Elberfeld. Our regular priest Fr Jun de Ocampo SVD was not able to come due to teeth extractions and we had Fr Eufemio Sombrio SVD, a Bol-anon from Loon. We were happy to have him as our mass celebrant and he has a strong rapport to us, how we wished he will served the Filipino community in North Rhine-westfalia!

A mass was said today in St Anthony Church which was dedicated to the town people who perished (6,000) last world War II, it was a solemn moment to remind everyone that war is not a solution and no war should happen again in a German soil. Nationalism and a form of totalitarian regime like that of Hitler should never be forgotten. Title: Re: Wuppertal, My Second Home! Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ) is a Western Catholic feast. It is also celebrated in some Anglican and Lutheran churches. It honors the Eucharist, which believers hold to be the actual body and blood of Christ, and as such it does not commemorate a particular event in Jesus' life. It is held on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday or, in some places, on the following Sunday. Its celebration on a Thursday is meant to associate it with institution by Jesus of the Eucharist during the Last Supper, commemorated on Maundy Thursday, and this is the first free Thursday after Paschaltide. In the Ordinary form[clarification needed] of the Roman rite of the Catholic Church, the feast is officially known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. In many English-speaking countries, Corpus Christi is transferred to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday by both Catholics and Anglicans. At the end of the Mass, it is customary to have a Procession of the Blessed Sacrament (often outdoors), followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.
