ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) – One third of adults drink excessively but are not alcoholics, says a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study analyzed information from over 138,000 U.S. adults between 2009 and 2011.
The researchers found that almost one in three adults was an excessive drinker because they usually participate in binge drinking on more than one occasion. Bing drinking is defined as drinking alcoholic beverages with the primary intention of becoming intoxicated by heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time.
The study found that only about 10 percent of excessive drinkers are alcohol dependent.
The researchers also found that among the people who reported binge drinking 10 or more times in a month did not meet the criteria for alcohol dependency.
According to the CDC, excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths a year between 2006 and 2010.
“Although alcohol dependence is an important public health problem, these findings suggest that most excessive drinkers are unlikely to need addiction treatment,†the researchers wrote in their study.
The study was published in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease.
