Death of a Filipino and two Chinese men
« on: June 05, 2007, 01:44:49 PM »
Police are investigating the deaths of two Chinese men and a Filipino, whose bodies were delivered from a fishing boat yesterday morning after two of them were allegedly murdered in the Philippine waters.

According to crew and agent of the Taiwanese registered vessel, the Chinese men were stabbed to death by the Filipino a day after he had joined the ship at high seas following a transfer from another vessel.

There were unconfirmed reports of the crew tying the Filipino up and him hitting his head, though other sources said he inflicted wounds on himself with the same knife he used to slay his fellow seamen.

The incident allegedly occurred in broad daylight while the three were working in Philippine waters on May 25. As a result of the incident the ship sailed straight to Suva port.

A Taifi Shipping Agency spokesperson, who requested anonymity, said while incidents like this were not uncommon, they were nevertheless shocked by the triple deaths and along with crew-members, could not fathom why the Filipino stabbed the men as they were not drunk nor was there a disagreement before the incident.

However, the agent did acknowledge there had always been "communication problems" with workers of various nationalities on vessels.

There were three other Filipinos, 18 Chinese and one Taiwanese national on board the Chien Chang at the time of the incident and tension was still high among crew members.

Police spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ulaiasi Ravula said police were expecting to interview the captain and crew today.

He said forensic detectives had combed the vessel yesterday gathering evidence as part of their initial investigations.

ASP Ravula said a post mortem examination of the three seamen was expected to be done within two days because of the state they were in after being kept for more than a week in the vessel's refrigerator.

He confirmed the incident had been reported by Taifi Shipping on June 1, and that it had occurred inside Philippine waters.

The vessel would not leave port until all investigations were completed. (fijitimes.com 6/5/2007)
