A lot of people think cancer is in the genes, but only five to 10 out of 100 cancers are caused by faulty genes alone.

What counts much more are environment and lifestyle factors that damage your DNA, many of which we can change.

This is good news because by tweaking our lifestyles we can greatly lower our chances of ever getting cancer.

About half of some cancers can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle.

Key is a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and white meat, consuming little or no alcohol, being physically active for 60 minutes a day, and not smoking.

Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of cancer, causing 22% of all cancer deaths and 71% of lung cancer deaths worldwide.

Tobacco smoke contains 70 cancer-causing chemicals. These carcinogens can damage important genes, making cells multiply out of control.

Every year, alcohol is associated with 3.6% of all cancers worldwide.

The alcohol does the damage, regardless of the type of drink.

A study by the US National Cancer Institute found that people who both smoke and drink are much more likely to get cancer than non-smokers and non-drinkers, because tobacco and alcohol act together to multiply the damage to cells.

Alcohol may act as a solvent and make it easier for the mouth and throat to absorb the harmful chemicals in tobacco smoke.

Diet accounts for nearly 10% of all cancers if a lack of fruit and vegetables, too little fibre, too much red or processed meat and excessive salt are included.

Five a day can reduce the risk of bowel, breast, kidney, womb and oesophageal cancers.

Fibre activates the production of helpful chemicals that can stop the growth of tumours in the bowel.

Red and processed meat contain an iron pigment, called haem, that can stimulate bacteria in the gut to produce cancer-causing chemicals.

Diets high in smoked and pickled foods are known to increase the risk of stomach cancer. Salt can harm the lining of the stomach, cause inflammation and interact with a bug that causes stomach ulcers and cancers.

Obesity is a cause of more than 5% of cancers overall. Fat in overweight people produces more hormones than in healthy people. High levels of some of these hormones, including the female sex hormone oestrogen, can stimulate breast cancers.

We didn’t expect to find that eating fruit and vegetables would prove so important in protecting men against cancer.

And among women we didn’t expect being overweight to have a greater effect than alcohol.
