Frog Dissections Banned at California High School

Rancho Verde High School near Riverside, CA has banned frog dissections and replaced them with computer-based virtual learning experiences. They are apparently the first high school to ban the dissection of real frogs in favor of learning the same process with software. Why switch? Millions of real animals are used in schools for dissection each year according to Animal Welfare Online.

The school received the software for free, in exchange for a five-year minimum commitment to not use real frogs any longer. Rancho Verde will save $6,800 by not having to purchase 30 frog dissection kits over the five-year period.

The Animal Welfare Institute and Save the Frogs! are working together to help schools move from real dissections to virtual ones, by sponsoring a contest to donate the virtual dissection software for free to the first 25 schools that agree to permanently drop using real animals.

Save the Frogs! wants to end all real frog dissections in American public schools by 2014. Their reasoning for wanting to stop the use of real frogs is based in the fact wild frog species around the world are in a steep decline due to a fungus epidemic, climate change and habitat loss. A very large number of frogs used in dissection are taken from wild places, only adding to the loss of frog species. Dissection frogs raised on farms can carry infectious diseases, and are nonnative species, which sometimes escape and do damage to local habitats. Frog dissections are not done only in the US though, “You are doing a commendable initiative in saving the frogs, as dissections in secondary schools claim the lives of thousands of frogs in Tanzania unnecessarily”, said Ignas, a Masters Student from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Save the Frogs! also says using real specimens teaches youth animals are disposable. It might also teach them animal life is not of any great significance, as the specimens are used for a while, then thrown away.

Frog dissection in the US for educational purposes has been going since at least the 1920s. Fortunately in today’s computer age there are viable alternatives using software programs, and it is no longer necessary to kill a huge number of frogs and other animals. Another benefit of using software is that through repeated student interactions, it can be enhanced and new versions can be created going forward.

di bitaw ko kasabot ani sa ato pong biology class. wa gyod koy nakuhang knowledge aning dissect-dissect. nangopya ra gihapon ko sa drawing sa libro aron lang ko maka-pass ug experiment paper. wa na lay labot nga sige kog lihay sa klase kay di gyod ko mo-dissect. kini sa high school pa.

sa college, aw, katulo ko mokuha ug biology kay mo-drop na man ko sa panahon sa ting-dissect kay mosakit man akong tiyan nga magtan-aw sa baki nga nag-apas ug ginhawa. nakasabot ra man tingali akong papa ato kay pagtan-aw niya sa akong grado nga "dr.", niingon man lang siya nga "nag-doctorate diay ka", hehe. gipapasar na lang tingali ko kadugayan sa teacher ato kay gipul-an na sa akong nawong nga nagtagolilong ug pila ka semesters.

How to Conquer Cat Car Anxiety

Men, children, people in general, thunderstorms, cars, other animals—all are common sources of cat anxiety. Often a cat’s fear begins with an initial bad experience—say, accidentally being locked in a car on a hot day. Cats express their fear in different ways. They may bite or scratch, run and hide, tremble, or even urinate when scared. Your job is to figure out what’s making your cat afraid and try to change those conditions.

Calming Cats in Carriers: A Gradual Process

It’s very common for a cat to be afraid of being locked in a carrier or travel crate while in the car. This action usually leads to a trip to the vet, and kitties are very good at anticipating what that may mean. You can help your cat get over that fear, but it will take some time. Start by leaving the carrier out on the floor with the door open and letting your cat explore it on her own. After she seems comfortable with the idea of the carrier being out in the open, place a treat near the entrance. If she eats the treat, put out another, a little farther into the carrier. When she takes that one, place another goodie inside the carrier, even farther toward the back. You may want to put a towel or a bed in the carrier to make it even more inviting. Eventually, the cat will get into the carrier, at which point you can start picking it up. Start by simply walking into another room and then letting your kitty out. Gradually increase the time the cat spends in the carrier and the distance until you can comfortably get her into the car.

Cat Scared of the Road? Take Her for a Ride

If you have to drag your shy cat to the car or she trembles uncontrollably during the ride, ask yourself whether you take her in the car only when she has to go to the vet or boarding kennel (or someplace else that he might find unpleasant). If the answer is yes, take her for a ride around town or go somewhere pleasant, such as a friend or relative’s house. Keep your cat calm by doing this several times until she gets the idea that a car ride doesn’t always lead to a scary place.

Calming Cat-in-Car Tricks

If your cat is afraid of the car, start to desensitize her by putting her in the car for a few minutes without turning the engine on. Then gradually expose her to more of the sensations associated with being in the vehicle. Work up to starting the engine, backing the car out of the driveway, and then actually going on a short trip. If you slowly desensitize her to more and more of the elements associated with a car trip, she will eventually learn to tolerate a road trip.

Morris, the Clark Gable of Cats

Morris the Cat (voiced by John Erwin) is the advertising mascot for 9Lives brand cat food, appearing on its packaging and in many of its television commercials. A large orange tabby tom, he is "the world's most finicky cat", and prefers only 9Lives brand, making this preference clear by means of humorously sardonic voice-over comments when offered other brands. Every can of 9Lives features Morris's "signature".

Morris has appeared in other media over the years. He debuted in the Robert Altman film The Long Goodbye (film) with Elliott Gould, and starred in the movie Shamus with Burt Reynolds and Dyan Cannon in 1973. He also appears as a "spokescat" promoting responsible pet ownership, pet health and pet adoptions through animal shelters. To this end, he has "authored" three books: The Morris Approach, The Morris Method and The Morris Prescription.

The Original Morris the Cat was a Rescue

There have been several tabby tomcats that have already portrayed Morris over the years in television commercials, but the original Morris was first called ‘Lucky’, and was from the Hinsdale Humane Society Animal Shelter in Lombard, Illinois. He was discovered in 1968 by Bob Martwick, who was an animal handler and an employee of the Leo Burnett Advertising Agency. Before being rescued, the original Morris the Cat was said to be scheduled to be euthanized in the shelter, 20 minutes prior to being discovered. Once he gained popularity through the successful commercials, he was even assigned guards to protect him from being catnapped.
