Why Tattoo Can Kill Your Loved One
« on: March 19, 2008, 09:08:13 PM »
Having a tattoo could result to death.

Why? Hospitals/Red Cross will never accept a blood donor with a tattoo.

Think of your father, or mother, or your own child in need of a blood at a critical moment of his or her life and you are the only person who is supposed to be the qualified blood donor but because of your tattoo, you can never donate your blood to a dying loved one.

You can't donate blood if you've had a tattoo or piercing in the past 12 months.

Tattooing is NOT a contraindication for donation of blood, because all candidates for blood donation, still have to go through the normal laboratory tests for B hepatitis, Herpes type II, syphilis, HIV, etc. If you pass that screening, it does NOT matter whether you have one or more tattoos.

Zel, based on my experience during my father's hospitalization, a hospital, during the pre-screening test, will only ask one question: "Do you have a tatoo?"

A yes answer is automatic rejection as potential blood donor.

Mike, what if you will say NO? Anyway, I don't think they will conduct a physical exam. As long as you know that 12 months has already passed then I think it's fine.

If one says NO, then he or she lies, and when Red Cross or the Hospital conducting the blood test finds it out, your blood will automatically be rejected.

Donating blood is not a walk in the park. There are several tests to be conducted before the final blood suction is done. Hospitals or the Red Cross don't want to waste time and resources going through these stages of tests, if, beforehand, they know or see that the blood donor candidate has a tattoo.

Besides, conducting a blood test up to blood suction will cost almost P3,000 and if the donor's blood does not match the patient's, the one who requested for blood testing will still pay the P3,000 fee.

That's why the hospital wants to eliminate all the hassle (it takes 8 to 12 hours or more of blood screening, testing before blood suction), let alone the financial burden of the patient, by immediately rejecting a person with a tattoo no matter how small it is or when it was made.

The hospital is aware that a person with a tattoo is more or less unsuitable as blood donor. This policy is embraced by all hospitals in the Philippines. I don't know with hospitals abroad if they apply the same guideline.

I had gone through all the pains and sorrows with sleepless nights and missed meals of finding a blood donor. I am speaking from my experience and I have read all the policies and guidelines on donating blood based on Philippine context.

I was even surprised learning that 90 - 95 percent of women are unsuitable as blood donors. This is where the supremacy of men comes in terms of saving someone's life. Why unsuitable? 1. Low hemoglobin 2. The monthly cycle

Zel, after ang babae dug-on, moubos iyang hemoglobin. Unya it takes weeks before mosaka napud ang hemoglobin. Inig saka sa hemoglobin, dug-on naman pud, so moubos na pud.

Mao ang hospital magmug-ot basta you bring a blood donor who is a woman. Kabalo man sila nga ma-reject ra gihapon.

Hello everyone. First off, sorry for reviving an old topic. But after reading this post, I felt compelled to reply and perhaps educate everyone about body art and blood donation.

The American RED CROSS accepts blood from people with body art or tattoos as long as first, you had it done in a state that actively regulates tattoo facilities. OR, if there is question as to the cleanliness or sanitation of the tattoo parlor. If so, then you hit yourself in the head for making that mistake and you have to wait 12 months before having yourself screened for blood donation.

So, in other words, it's perfectly ok to get a tattoo. It's a form of expression, just like getting an earring or wearing that shirt you found awesome. I find it unfair that a hospital rejects a person from donating blood just because he/she wears a tattoo. If they do, then I certainly HOPE they reject people with earrings or other body piercings because they share the same risk of getting sick due to unsanitary conditions or infected needles. Which means, if you decided to poke your ear with a needle to wear an earring, then you will have to wait a year before donating blood.

BUT, you have to be VERY smart in choosing the place to get a tattoo. I can understand why blood banks or hospitals reject people with ink done because of the way they get it in the philippines. Just avoid getting inked from someone's backyard, frat parties or at underground tattoo parlors. Make sure that you see the needle coming out from a newly opened package, that the ink they used is NOT re-used, the tattoo artist washes his hands first and wears latex gloves, and lastly, the needle is properly disposed of.

I'm a proud father of two, with multiple tattoos that have deep meaning and symbolism for me. I'm also a regular blood donor and a member of the international RED CROSS. I love tattoos, and I love the freedom of expression. Don't let people hold you back in getting that tattoo you've always wanted. It's perfectly SAFE and risk free. You just have to be SMART about it.

I think the reason is fairly simple.

You get an ear piercing or a tattoo it would necessarilly include needle pricks, needles which may not be as sanitary or sterile if you get my drift.

An unsanitary needle could easilly cntaminate your blood.

Not that the hospital knows its contaminated. If they will run tests on a guy with piercings or tattoos, there is a bigger chance of getting a positive dirty blood.

And by the tests, the donor would pay.

He donates and he pays for a test, when its free donation, that is too bad for him.

So the hospital says its up to you, but yuo would pay for the tests. If you cant, then the hospital has reserved the right t refuse.

Its just that you need to know about this, and the hospital must tell you the real score.
