Hello everyone. First off, sorry for reviving an old topic. But after reading this post, I felt compelled to reply and perhaps educate everyone about body art and blood donation.
The American RED CROSS accepts blood from people with body art or tattoos as long as first, you had it done in a state that actively regulates tattoo facilities. OR, if there is question as to the cleanliness or sanitation of the tattoo parlor. If so, then you hit yourself in the head for making that mistake and you have to wait 12 months before having yourself screened for blood donation.
So, in other words, it's perfectly ok to get a tattoo. It's a form of expression, just like getting an earring or wearing that shirt you found awesome. I find it unfair that a hospital rejects a person from donating blood just because he/she wears a tattoo. If they do, then I certainly HOPE they reject people with earrings or other body piercings because they share the same risk of getting sick due to unsanitary conditions or infected needles. Which means, if you decided to poke your ear with a needle to wear an earring, then you will have to wait a year before donating blood.
BUT, you have to be VERY smart in choosing the place to get a tattoo. I can understand why blood banks or hospitals reject people with ink done because of the way they get it in the philippines. Just avoid getting inked from someone's backyard, frat parties or at underground tattoo parlors. Make sure that you see the needle coming out from a newly opened package, that the ink they used is NOT re-used, the tattoo artist washes his hands first and wears latex gloves, and lastly, the needle is properly disposed of.
I'm a proud father of two, with multiple tattoos that have deep meaning and symbolism for me. I'm also a regular blood donor and a member of the international RED CROSS. I love tattoos, and I love the freedom of expression. Don't let people hold you back in getting that tattoo you've always wanted. It's perfectly SAFE and risk free. You just have to be SMART about it.
