Municipio Inabanga personnel recently completed the Training on the Guidelines for implementing Tuberculosis Control Program in Children at the Monina Midtown Pension in Poblacion, Tubigon on June 15-19.
Doctors and personalities from the Provincial Health Office (PHO), Department of Health-Infectious Disease Central Office in Manila, the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital (GCGMH), the Tagbilaran City Health Office and the Linking Initiatives and Networking to Control Tuberculosis (TBLINC) facilitated the activity.
The five-day training course focused on case finding, identification and the management of TB in children employing the Directly Observed Treatment Short Term (DOTS) strategy.
The National Tuberculosis Program in Children targets to detect and cure tuberculosis cases among the 0-14years old.
Having the highest referrals to the Provincial Health Office (PHO), Inabanga was chosen to be the pilot area for testing the Protein Purified Derivative (PPD) – a skin test to screen tuberculosis among the 10 priority towns in the first batch of training. Some 300 pupils of the Inabanga Central Elementary School were tested with PPD.
The reagent costs P250 per injection but was given by the Department of Health (DOH) for free. DOH will also give TB antibiotics for six months in case the child develops TB symptoms.
Meanwhile, USAID sponsored the snacks of the children during the testing and reading of the test.
Bohol is the pilot area chosen for the TB in children training program, with the support of the Department of Health (DOH) and USAid. After the trainings shall have been done in the whole province, Bohol will be the model area for the TB in children program.
USAid shouldered the training cost while the medicines including PPD were from DOH.
