The Sea Kaunlaran Association (SKA) of Hambongan Island in Inabanga town is now P150,000 richer with funds from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 7 office.
Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy said the amount will be used for training and to procure materials for a seaweeds-farming project - an alternative livelihood for marginalized fishermen.
At 21 years of age, the youngest mayor of Bohol - if not in the entire country - is always scouting around for environment-friendly programs and projects with corresponding funds that can be replicated in his town.
Environment protection, conservation, preservation or enhancement belongs to the Jumamoy administration's top three priorities. At the same time, seaweeds farming is a tool for poverty reduction.
