published by the Bohol Sunday PostDr. Jose Riza, the Philippine national hero once said gambling breeds dislike for steady and difficult toil by its promise of sudden wealth.
To some, gambling is a form of recreation and a means to gain income. However, gambling can also be psychologically addictive that pushes the inveterate gambler to bet even after repeated losses.
Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy recently initiated a symposium on anti-illegal gambling at the Municipal Cultural Center after noting that more and more minors have become involved in gambling, prodded into it by unscrupulous adults who say that minors cannot be imprisoned anyway.
He said while gambling is part of Filipino culture, the people should refrain from those declared illegal - and adults should enjoin children from engaging in such activities - to teach them right from wrong.
Jumamoy declared that he has zero tolerance for illegal gambling. Adults should inculcate this in their minds, otherwise, if they are caught, they might spend their Christmas in jail, he warned.
For his part, Chief of Police Melanio Artiaga who was among the resource persons reminded public officials that if found guilty of illegal gambling beyond reasonable doubt, they face up to 12 to 20 years of imprisonment or paying fines of up to P3 million to P5 million or both, and perpetual absolute disqualification from their position.
Also present at the symposium were Vice Mayor Wenceslao Lao, municipal councilors Jovanna Jumamoy, Alex Lofranco, Nena Melecio and Municipal Peace and Order Council Officer Salazar, as well as barangay officials.
