AROUND 400 priests wooed Catholics with songs of faith and love during a concert to raise funds for the 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC).

On its debut night last Thursday, the Archdiocese of Cebu attracted more than 3,000 people to “400 Priests in Cebu in Concert: Faith, Love and Songs.”

Msgr. Ruben Labajo, who heads the organizing committee for the concert, told reporters they expect to attract more people to watch the concert. The concert was held from Thursday until last night.

Labajo also joined his fellow Cebu clergymen in singing.

Wearing white polo shirts and black slacks, the 400 priests, led by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, sang a number of classical religious songs such as the “Our Father”, “Ave Maria” (Hail Mary), “Panis Angelicus” (Bread of Angels) and “O Salutoris Hostia” (Oh Saving Host).

Aside from religious songs, the priests also sang a number of original Filipino songs, such as “Ikaw Rin ang Mahal” by Leopoldo Silos; “Babayeng Sugbuanon” by Paquito Balbona; and “Barkada.”

Other choirs also assisted the priests in the concert.

The Mandaue Children’s Choir, led by conductor Dennis Sugarol, did its version of Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven”, “Together We can Change the World” and “Light of a Million Mornings.”

The choirs of the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu and the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral also performed.

Fr. Jonas Mejares, rector of the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino de Cebu, also accompanied the two choirs with his rendition of “This is the Moment.”

Students of the San Carlos Seminary College also sang in the concert.

There were also individual performers, like Elvis Somosot, Jessica Mcyorker, Girlie Laspiñas and Jay-Arr Librando.

The concert lasted for three hours.

After the concert, Palma said he was happy with the turnout.

He told reporters the concert was not just to help raise funds for the 51st IEC but also to gauge the Eucharistic Pavilion’s facilities such as the sound system, lights and air-conditioning.
