The straightforward film, a fast-paced montage of archival footage, photographs and newspaper headlines, with the subjects talking to the camera, is sprinkled with clichés (“once again they upped the anteâ€) and seems better suited for the small screen. (American public television, in fact, is showing it this month.) The credits reveal that many of the refugees and family members interviewed in the film also had a role in getting it made.
Ultimately, this compelling story will leave viewers wanting even more information about this mission and the daily lives of the émigrés in Manila. In telling their stories, the former refugees and the proud descendants of the leaders involved can finally publicly express their enduring sense of gratitude and faith in humanity.
