Tilapia is Worse For You Than Bacon

The true chicken-of-the-sea, tilapia is a mild-tasting white fish that’s cheap to breed and easy to sell. In fact, for the first time in 2012, farmed fish production topped that of beef, reaching a record 66 million tons, compared with beef at 63 million. But there’s a dirty secret about tilapia, the lean-meat alternative that beckons you in the supermarket–promises of muscle tone, a healthy heart and beautiful skin ringing in your ears. While most health experts agree we should be eating more fish (for all the reasons listed above), research has found the inflammatory potential of farmed tilapia to be greater than a burger, doughnuts—even pork bacon! It gets worse …

1. It's the Worst Kind of Fat

Compared with other fish, farmed tilapia contains relatively small amounts of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids–the heart-healthy and essential fish oils touted by health and nutrition experts as the main reason to eat fish frequently. While a portion of salmon has over 2,000 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids, a serving of tilapia has a mere 135 milligrams. Moreover, because farmed tilapia subsist on a diet of corn and soy instead of lake plants, they’re proportionally sky high in omega-6 fats, which studies have proven to harm the heart, the brain, and even your mood. The Wake Forest University study that produced the tilapia vs. bacon findings revolves around this dangerous omega 6:3 proportion.

2. They Have the Crappiest Diet

There’s a good chance the tilapia on your plate was raised on a poop diet (that’s poop as a noun, not an adjective). Research from the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future revealed the gory details of disease-ridden fish farms in Asia, where pig and chicken feces serve as a cheaper alternative to standard fish food. While the FDA vehemently denied any of these goings-on, the Johns Hopkins investigation revealed only 2 percent of imported seafood to the United States is actually tested for contamination. It’s not just mega gross. Experts worry that the large amounts of antibiotics given to the fish to ward off infections may give rise to antibiotic-resistant strains of salmonella.

3. They've Had a Sex Change

Virtually all tilapia sold in American supermarkets has undergone a sex change–the result of being fed methyltestosterone during the early, sexless stage of life. Tilapia pumped full of hormones grow bigger quicker than their natural bros, because they don’t expend energy developing reproductive organs and require less food. Seafood experts consider the effects of methyltestosterone in fish to be insignificant to our health. However, there’s research to suggest the drug can be highly toxic to the liver. In fact, methyltestosterone has been taken off the market in Germany due to its high potential for liver toxicity.

4. They Cause a Negative Environmental Impact

Environmentalists argue that intensive and unregulated tilapia farming is damaging ecosystems, leaving dead lakes and extinct species in poor countries with practices prohibited in the United States. In Nicaragua, for example, huge numbers of fish are bred in cages, where fish waste pollutes the lake water. Such was the case at Lake Apoyo, where pollution killed off the aquatic plants, leaving the lake a wasteland.

5. Eat This, Not Tilapia!

When it comes to choosing a fish that’s healthiest for your body—and the Earth—abide by the number one rule: Stay off the farm. Farmed seafood, not just tilapia, can have up to 10 times more toxins than wild fish, according to Harvard Researchers. Your best choices at the fish counter include: Wild Alaskan Salmon, Alaska Pollok, Atlantic Cod, Clams, Blue Crab, Atlantic Mackerel, Striped Bass, Sardines, Herring, Rainbow Trout and Flounder.

8 Surprising Foods Worse Than Bacon

Bacon, crisp, greasy, delicious bacon. Is there anything more delicious? Is there anything worse for you?

Yes.

Well, there are foods worse for you, whether there are foods that are more delicious—that’s subjective, but we say no.

Bacon has a much undeserved bad rap. A single slice has only 43 calories, 3 grams of fat (1 saturated), 3 grams of protein, and 82 mg of sodium. As far as indulgences go you could eat far worse, like:

Breakfast Sausage
Calories: 267
Fat: 20 g (Saturated:  5.5 g)
Sodium: 540 mg

Next time Flo (the diner waitress, of course) asks you if you want bacon or sausage with your order of over easies, opt for bacon. You can have more than 6 slices of bacon before you come close to the damage that one pork sausage will do to your love handles and arteries.

Peanut Butter
Calories: 188
Fat: 16 g (Saturated: 3 g)
Sodium: 147 mg

Peanut butter is often touted as a super food; “healthy fats” they say. But with 3 grams of saturated fat per serving it has more than its fare share of unhealthy fats. You can have three slices of bacon before you reach the same level of saturated fat, and you’ll still have fewer calories and total fat grams.

Coffee…with Half & Half
Calories: 40
Fat: 4g (Saturated: 2 g)
Sodium: 6 mg

The calories we drink in our morning cup(s) of joe may seem inconsequential, but two tablespoons of half-and-half has as many calories as a slice of bacon and twice as much saturated fat.

Starburst Fruit Chews
Calories: 241
Fat: 5g (Saturated 5 g)
Sodium: 1mg

Candy isn’t exactly health food, we know that, but a little treat now and then is a perfectly acceptable part of balanced diet. But Starburst, those tasty square taffy-esque nuggets of happiness, are surprisingly ALL saturated fat.  At least bacon has some healthy fats (and protein).

Caesar Dressing
Calories: 79
Fat: 8g (Saturated 1 g)
Sodium: 156mg

Choosing between a BLT and a Caesar Salad, go with the BLT! One tablespoon of Caesar dressing (and let’s be honest, who uses just one tablespoon) has almost twice as many calories, three times as much fat and the same amount of saturated fat as a slice of bacon. If your BLT has three slices of bacon and your Caesar salad as 3 spoonfuls of dressing, your choice is pretty obvious.

By the way, that Caesar dressing probably isn’t vegetarian-friendly either.

American Cheese
Calories: 105
Fat: 9g (Saturated 6 g)
Sodium: 182mg

A one-ounce serving of American Cheese (a standard slice) has three times as much fat/six times as much saturated fat than a single slice of bacon. Does that make you think twice about your favorite breakfast sandwich?

Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat Bran
Calories: 197
Fat: 7g (Saturated 3 g)
Sodium: 35mg

Think you’re doing your body a favor by opting for cereal instead of bacon with breakfast? Think again! The only thing this “good for you” cereal has over bacon is fiber—which you can easily get from high quality bread. You can have three slices of bacon with your breakfast and still have fewer calories than this cereal (and don’t forget the added fat and calories from milk).

Turkey Bacon
Calories: 35
Fat: 3g (Saturated 1 g)
Sodium: 180mg

Turkey bacon may have 7 calories fewer per slice (yes, that’s it, 7) but it has exactly the same amount of fat and sat fat and more than twice the sodium.  You’re doing yourself no favors by opting for chopped and formed turkey meat; just go with the real stuff and enjoy your bacon!
