Three days to New Year: Health dept reports 105 injuries from firecrackers, 1 from stray bullet

MANILA, Dec. 29 (PNA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) reported Thursday that it has recorded a total of 105 injuries from firecrackers nationwide and its first injury from a stray bullet since its monitoring began on December 21.

The department said a 27-year-old man was hit by a stray bullet on his head last Dec. 25 while he was inside his residence in Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya. He is undergoing treatment at the Veterans Regional Hospital.

Of the 105 cases, 54 were recorded in the National Capital Region (NCR), with Manila leading the other cities with 24 cases, followed by Quezon City with 12, Mandaluyong with five, Navotas with four, two each from Marikina, Las Piñas and Pasay, and one each from Valenzuela, Pasig and Malabon.

Based on regions, NCR was the topnotcher, followed by Western Visayas with 11 cases, Calabarzon with 10, Ilocos with seven, Central Visayas with six, Central Luzon with five, Davao and Eastern Visayas with four each, Bicol with three, and Cagayan Valley with one.

Of the 105, 79 were children below 15 years old. Of the 79, 47 were injured by the ‘piccolo’, which continues to be the top cause of injuries, accounting for 61 cases, followed by the improvised cannon called ‘boga’ with 10 cases.

Meanwhile, most of the injuries were on hands (66 cases) and eyes (21 cases).

The youngest victim was three years old while the oldest was 62 years old.

Meanwhile, the DOH continued to call on local government units to ensure the safety of their constituents by supporting safer ways to welcome the New Year instead of lighting firecrackers.

At the same time, it also reminded those who are injured to seek medical help in DOH hospitals.(PNA)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
