The brain's frontal lobe is responsible for a variety of tasks. One section of the prefrontal cortex, for instance, is associated with activities that require concentration. The medial frontal region, however, switches on when you do something non-task oriented in a resting state, such as monitoring your surroundings. Studies have shown that, starting between 40 and 60 years of age, these two parts of your brain don't switch off according to the task at hand. Instead, both areas stay "on," contributing to a lowered ability to concentrate.
