The Bohol Chronicle

A ten-man United States delegation led by four congressmen and two state assemblywomen will be in Bohol tomorrow as part of a 14-day Philippine visit by virtue of the continuing exchange program between the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) and the host country's National Movement of Young Legislators (NMYL), which past presidents include Cong. Edgar Chatto of the First District of Bohol.

This once-in-a-lifetime visit would add pride to Boholanos in the province and abroad while events like these can be beamed worldwide through dyRD's broadcast via Internet.

The visiting young US lawmakers include Reps. Bill Huizenga of Michigan, Roger James Roth of Wisconsin, John Lesch of Minnesota and Ted Martin Vick of South Carolina, and Assemblywomen Nicole Parra of California and Gerron Levi of Maryland.

They will be accompanied by Mayor Brad Cole of Carbondale, Illinois, Executive Director Jill Krowinski of the Vermont Democratic Party and Associate General Consul Marcia Rubensohn of the Georgia Municipal Association.

NMYL national president and Quezon City Councilor Julian M.L. Coseteng has coordinated with 1st District Rep. Edgar Chatto, the national head of the movement while yet a vice governor, for Bohol's successful hosting of the visit that will last until Wednesday.

Inabanga Councilor Jaja Jumamoy is the present Bohol president of NMYL.

In 1995, the 6,000-strong NMYL forged with the ACYPL, its US counterpart, an agreement on bilateral exchange program on which the visit of the young US political leaders has been granted and arranged.

Bohol, as a top tourist destination in the country, will be showcased to the ACYPL delegation.  Chatto is the head of the tourism committee in Congress.

Like NMYL, the ACYPL rejects partisanship to attain solidarity among its members.

Huizenga, Roth, and Rubensohn are Republicans while Parra, Krowinski, Levi, Lesch, Vick and Cole are Democrats.

In his first term, Huizenga was only one of two neophytes elected to the assistant majority floor leadership of the Michigan State House of Representatives.  In his second term, he was appointed to chair the commerce committee while serving in the banking and financial services committee and co-chairing the joint select committee on oversight of the 21st Century Job Funds.  He is a licensed realtor.

Rubensohn is the associate general counsel for legislative affairs of the Georgia Municipal Association, which represents over 500 municipalities in the state. She once served as an attorney for the Georgia Senate.

Parra chairs the agriculture committee and serves in the banking and finance, insurance, and waterparks and wildlife committees of the California State Assembly.

Krowinski, executive director of the Vermont Democratic Party, founded a non-profit organization dedicated at registering young people to vote.

Levi sits in the Maryland House of Delegates' judiciary committee and the special committee on drugs and alcohol abuse. A member of the Legislative Black Caucus, she has lobbied in the US Senate, Congress and executive branch on policies affecting fair wages and working conditions, health care, pensions and health.

In the Minnesota House of Representatives, Lesch focuses his legislations on crime public safety and economic justice issues.  Added to his being a legislator is the job of an assistant city attorney prosecuting domestic assault crimes.

In Illinois State, Cole was first elected the youngest-ever mayor of Carbondale City, a community of only over 27,000 residents but operates as a local government on an annual budget of over P1.6 billion.

Nice, nice! I love hearing news like this--hopefully the legislators will bring nothing but good news about Bohol, Philippines back to their respective constituents--and encourage more Americans to visit the Philippines!!
