The Tagbilaran City airport would need a major rehabilitation to meet aviation standards, a top airport official here said.
This was admitted by Manager Edgar Solis of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) here after commuters experienced several flight cancellations last week. Not spared from the cancelled trips were presidentiables Gilberto Teodoro and Sen. Manny Villar as well as vice presidentiable Sen. Loren Legarda whose flights from Manila were cancelled due to poor visibility at the Tagbilaran City Airport runway.
The facility is really outmoded and there is a need for major upgrades to cope with the modern standards of aircrafts, the growing number of air passengers and to comply with aviation standards, the CAAP manager said.
He also admitted that the runway lights are no longer functioning after the old lights from the Dumaguete Airport were shipped here to replace the stolen lights. However, an electrical shortfall is preventing the shoulder runway lights to operate, Solis said.
However, he said that even if the runway lights be restored, it will not solve the problem on "poor visibility" since what is lacking is the "instrument landing system" (ILS) that will guide the plane and pilot in determining the distance from the runway.
