Housing Project in Bohol Province
« on: February 15, 2011, 02:09:05 AM »
Vice Pres. Jejomar Binay, Gov. Edgar Edgar Chatto and chief executives of other selected provinces will meet in Cebu City on Wednesday and Thursday to address homelessness.

They will strategize the national housing program targeting Bohol as one project site in a two-day critical workshop pinpointing ways to raise production base for housing thru the active involvement of the local government units (LGUs).

This will fulfill the promise of the vice president to the governor during Binay's first official visit to Bohol shortly after assuming the second highest elective post of the land.

Binay has himself been tasked by Pres. Benigno Aquino III to chair the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).

Chatto will come along with key personnel from the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) to the workshop, which not only strengthens the LGUs in housing delivery but local development planning as well.

The vice president will also have the vital attendance of officials from key shelter agencies attached the HUDCC.

Chief executives and planning officials from selected 131 provinces, cities and municipalities have been expected in the workshop that pursues, too, the mandates of the Urban Development and Housing Act.

The vice president is expected to relay to them the gains of his recent trip to the United States where he keynoted the disaster risk reduction and management and urban development sessions of the World Bank Sustainable Development Network (WB-SDN).

The WB assured Binay of support as the vice president guaranteed the global financial institution of the commitment of the Aquino administration to integrated development, including how to address the lack of decent human shelters.

Chatto said the vice president, himself a former local chief executive being a long-time mayor of moneyed Makati City, well understands the limitations of poor and low-income LGUs in the face of the growing constituent demands.

The governor is happy that in his US visit, Binay also discussed with Sec. Shaun Donovan of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (DHUD).

Binay visited the DHUD public housing sites, where he met with officials of the Habitat for Humanity.

Chatto said the vice president's meeting with the Habitat officials could confidently cause the rise of more affordable yet decent houses in the country, including Bohol where Habitat have already roofed hundreds of lowly families.

The governor supported the Habitat projects here, one of which, the housing site on Banat-i Hill in Bool, Tagbil;aran City, was built with no less than former US Pres. Jimmy Carter andf his wife among the rare volunteer carpenters several years ago.

In addition, Chatto, then vice governor and congressman, helped the Habitat settlers in having power, water, Day Care Center and asphalt main access road, among others.

The governor supported another Habitat housing project, this time in Panglao for the disabled Boholanos who call him their "sublime big brother." (Ven rebo Arigo)
