Bohol is now one of the very few provinces that produce high quality and safe feeds, both for aqua and livestock, with the opening of of Feedmill II of Marcela Farms of Alturas Group in Ubay town yesterday.

This capacity expansion also makes the feed mill one of the biggest in the country. In a nation whose people who largely partake of fish, chicken and pork along with the staple cereal (rice), the feed mill fills in a major link in the food supply chain.

By safe, it means its production of feeds is 100% non-use of anti-biotics to ensure the highest quality of feeds comparable with any imported brand.

The manufacturing breakthrough came after the company invested in constructing a nine-storey feed mill tower plant with the capacity of 20,000 tons per hour of hog and poultry feeds. . The upgrading of its original feedmill established in November 2000, came after Marcela Farms ventured in large scale processing of chicken and livestock which are all of "export" quality.

As technology evolved. the new feed mill became the first project of Van Aarsen of Europe using the latest state-of-the-art technology.

Because of its level of excellence in terms of high quality feeds, a major multi--national company is now negotiating with Marcela Farms to produce its feed requirement.

The expansion of the Feedmill Plant is an add-on image of Bohol as a province where livestock and aqua feed producing capacity has grown to become of the country's biggest. The project can be considered as an agro-industrial one - where the manufacturing output is used by agricultural mainstays like chicken , fish and livestock.

As a proof of its world class set-up, the country's famous Max Fried Chicken now buys its supply of dressed chickens from Marcela Farms while the leading Jollibee will follow suit The feed mill therefore partakes of a "backward integration" strategy as feeds are an important component for the chickens' growth and health.

With the opening of Feed Mill II, Engr. Irvin Mata, operations manager said the production for aqua feeds is now being handled solely at Feed Mill I while the newly opened freed Mill 2 caters to livestock feeds.

General Manager Marlito Uy of Alturas Group personally welcomed Gov. Edgar Chatto, Rep Erico Aumentado, Ubay Mayor Eutiquio Bernales and other guests during yesterday's opening while Fr James Darunday officiated the blessing rites.
