Simultaneous tree planting activities in Bohol turned in at least 18,939 seedlings of narra and mahogany planted in military reservations, open public lands in an hour as the government launched the Trees for Life with 2 million trees all over the country by 2010.

The Bohol figure was reported by at least two military units who joined President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, representatives from government and non-government organizations and volunteers in affirming the commitment to protect the environment through the Trees for Life (TFL) project Wednesday, July 18, 2007.

The DENR said the TFL is the "lead forestry initiative under the President’s Green Philippines Program (GPP)," and is a four-point campaign consisting of reforestation, preservation of reefs and waterways, cleansing the land and air of toxic pollutants, and energy independence," which was simultaneously started across the country that same day.

Aside from planting the seedlings, the volunteers also pledged to follow-though with the following post-planting activities: maintain and protect the planted seedlings and sustain partnership with the DENR for continuous coordination within the first three years.

Major Anastacio Suaybaguio Jr, 302nd Brigade Civil Military Operations chief said his unit along with civilian volunteers planted 658 more trees at 6088, a little over the target of 5,373 trees in an hour.

Ubay volunteers also put in 4,000 trees, while Carmen barangays planted a total of 1,600 seedlings, reports said.

The trees, planted at the military reservation inside Camp Rajah Sikatuna, Barangays Nueva Vida Este, Nueva Fuerza, Alegria and Bicao in Carmen and Ubay military reservation were all planted in an hour, but the planting went on for the whole morning even before the authorities signaled the start at about 10:00 am.

On the other hand, Maj. Edwin Ureta of the Army Engineering Support Battalion, 53EBDE based in Ilijan Sur of Tubigon, which unit also coordinated another tree planting activity on Bohol’s northwest town reported 7,251,678 trees planted by 2417 volunteer participants. The trees were planted at the military reservation at Ilijan Sur in Tubigon.

The President on that day declared the La Mesa Dam in Novaliches, Quezon City as an watershed reservation site as it is a vital source of water supply for Metro Manila’s 12 million residents.

La Mesa also serves as a holding facility or reservoir for water coming from the three watersheds upstream – Umiray, Angat and Ipo in Bulacan.

Aside from the La Mesa watershed reservation, the President also declared as a protected area and national park the Mt. Inayaowan range in Lanao del Norte.

Trees for Life is one of the Arroyo administration’s timely interventions to stem the unabated destruction of the country’s forests which stood at 17 million hectares 70 years ago, but is now down to only 7.2 million hectares, according to forestry statistics in 2003. (rachiu/PIA)
