Bamboo Business in Getafe, Bohol

By Sunday Post

Traditional sight of a pumpboat full of bamboo poles leaving the two wharves of Getafe- -either heading to the island barangays or to the neighboring coastal towns, or even to Surigao in the south, or Ilo-ilo in the north. That is ordinary routine to sell the bamboo poles from Getafe.

Another interesting sight as one traverses Getafe’s mainland is the proliferation of small-scale furniture shops along its bamboo.

They could be in a form of sofa, chairs, beds, dividers, mirror frames and many more, all made up of bamboo. And, despite the plastic screens easily made available in our markets today, traditional fishermen still prefer fish traps (bungsod, bubo, bantak and panggal) knitted from bamboo poles, sticks or bamboo skins which have remained good fish catchers.

Because of the myriad of benefits bamboo has brought to man and to the Getfaenhons in particular, Getafe Mayor Tessie Camacho has manifested her keen interest in Getafe’s bamboo industry as she indicated her desire to upgrade it soon.

Through the town’s Municipal Planning and Development Office, Mayor Tessie Camacho called a meeting on all Getafenhons engaged in the bamboo business on February 12 at the SB Hall.

Attended by a considerable number of stakeholders, the meeting brought forth inputs from the attendees themselves on how to improve Getafe’s present bamboo industry and on how to profitably sustain it as its demand increases in the future.

Moreover, as organizing is one bold step towards attaining a common goal or objective, Getafe’s bamboo planters, producers and makers have bound themselves like bamboo sticks into one strong force named “Getafe Bamboo Makers Organization” or GBMO.

Election of its officers has been set on February 19 in Barangay Salog, Getafe.

DOST also slated a one-day seminar workshop in an effort to update GMBO members of the latest technology in bamboo-raising and bamboo-making among others.

Optimistic that Getafe’s beautiful beaches along Pandanon Island and Asia’s biggest man-made mangrove plantation and park in Banacon Island will attract more tourists here, Mayor Camacho also envisions the future “boo” of Getafe’s bamboo industry and make it another inexcusable reason for others to come Getafe, too.

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
