The voices behind famous video game characters
« on: May 02, 2013, 04:24:58 PM »

Charles Martinet (Mario)
Martinet is best known as Mario -- a voice he’s been handling since the mid-1990s -- but his contributions to the Nintendo world don't stop there. He's also the voice of Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Toadsworth, Baby Mario and Baby Luigi. Wondering what Mario sounded like before Martinet landed the role? Find a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 to hear a much deeper, raspier version of the portly plumber. (Photo credit: Nintendo)

Camilla Luddington (Lara Croft)
Luddington, a regular on "Grey's Anatomy," isn't the first to voice Tomb Raider's heroine, but her terrific work in the recent reboot of the series is the one most people identify with these days. All totaled, five actresses have voiced the character in her history: Shelley Blond (1996), Judith Gibbins (1997-1998), Jonell Elliott (1999-2003), Keeley Hawes (2006-2010) and Luddington. Steve Downes (Master Chief)
When he's not fighting off the Covenant as Halo’s hero, Downes is likely spinning Alice Cooper or Aerosmith. A classic rock DJ who hosts a morning show on Chicago's WDRV, he didn't really give much thought to the character until he found himself swamped by kids asking for an autograph when he was visiting a friend in Florida. Jen Taylor (Cortana)
Taylor is voice-over royalty. While best known as Cortana, Master Chief's AI companion in the Halo series, she has also voiced Mario’s Princess Peach, Left 4 Dead's Zoey, and Cate Archer in No One Lives Forever 2. It's not all games, however: she’s also an in-demand narrator for audio books. (Photo credit: Microsoft)

Nolan North (Nathan Drake)
North turned heads with his performance as Uncharted's hunky lead, but he's hardly restricted to that franchise. He's Assassin's Creed's Desmond Miles. He voiced The Penguin in Batman: Arkham City. He's portrayed Deadpool in a number of Marvel games. He's even had a steady role in the Zombies mode of several Call of Duty games. If there's a go-to voice actor in the gaming world, North's it. Ellen McLain (GLaDOS)
If McLain weren't the voice behind the passive-aggressive AI antagonist in Portal, GLaDOS probably wouldn't be so musically inclined. Beyond her voice work, McLain's also an opera singer. She's also a go-to person for Valve Software, having appeared in Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. She’s also making a vocal appearance in Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming giant monster movie, “Pacific Rim.” (Photo credit: Valve Software/Ellen McLain)

Terrence C. Carson (Kratos)
Kratos is an angry warrior in the God of War series, but Carson's a pretty easygoing guy. He most famously played Kyle Barker on the FOX series “Living Single” and was seen last November/December as one of the mall carolers in the Marshalls/T.J. Maxx commercial. He's also the voice double for Samuel L. Jackson's Mace Windu in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. (Photo credit: Sony/Getty Images)

Kevin Conroy (Batman)
Conroy's not just the voice of Batman in the critically-acclaimed Arkham City and Arkham Asylum games -- he speaks for the Dark Knight in Batman: The Animated Series and its various spin-offs. A graduate of Julliard, he roomed at the school's drama division with Robin Williams. (Photo credit: Warner Bros. Interactive/Getty Images)

David Hayter (Solid Snake)
Hayter's a double-treat in the entertainment world. As a voice actor, he has brought life to Solid Snake in the Metal Gear series since 1998. When he's not in a sound studio, Hayter's likely at a typewriter. In addition to his vocal work, he also wrote the screenplay for “X-Men” and co-wrote “The Scorpion King” and “X2.” (Photo credit: Konami/David Hayter)

Roger Craig Smith (Sonic the Hedgehog)
Smith has voiced the speedy hedgehog since 2010 (Ryan Drummond held the job from 1998-2004, but moved on after he was asked to quit his union.) He's also the voice of Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil series and, perhaps most bizarrely, the narrator for TLC's reality series "Say Yes the Dress." (Photo credit: Sega/Roger Craig Smith)
