Ronald Wilson Reagan (1911 – 2004) was the 40th President of the United States (1981–1989). Prior to that, he was the 33rd Governor of California (1967–1975), and a radio, film and television actor. Reagan negotiated with Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, culminating in the INF Treaty and the decrease of both countries' nuclear arsenals. A conservative icon, he ranks highly in public opinion polls of U.S. Presidents and is credited for generating an ideological renaissance on the American political right. In 1994, the former president disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease earlier in the year; he died ten years later at the age of 93.

Keith Moon (with Paul and Linda McCartney in the picture)
musician

Keith John Moon (1946 – 1978) was an English musician, best known for being the drummer of the English rock group The Who. He was well known for his unique drumming style, and gained notoriety for his eccentric and often self-destructive behaviour. On September 6, 1978, Moon took 32 tablets of clomethiazole (Heminevrin), a sedative which was prescribed to Moon to alleviate his alcohol withdrawal symptoms. The police determined there were 32 pills in Moon's system, with the digestion of six being sufficient to cause his death, and the other 26 of which were still undissolved when he died.

Mark Twain
author

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 - 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the latter often called "the Great American Novel." His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Twain passed through a period of deep depression that began in 1896 when his daughter Susy died of meningitis. His wife's death in 1904 and another daughter's on December 24, 1909, deepened his gloom. In 1909, Twain is quoted as saying:

"I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it. It will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don't go out with Halley's Comet. The Almighty has said, no doubt: 'Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together."

His prediction was accurate—Twain died of a heart attack on April 21, 1910, in Redding, Connecticut, one day after the comet's closest approach to Earth.

Christopher Johnson McCandless
adventurer

Christopher Johnson McCandless (1968 - 1992) was an American adventurer who adopted the alias Alexander Supertramp and hiked into the Alaskan wilderness in April 1992 with little food and equipment, hoping to live simply for a time in solitude.  Almost four months later, McCandless' remains were found, weighing only 67 pounds (30 kg); he died most likely of starvation near Lake Wentitika in Denali National Park and Preserve.

Anne Frank
author

Annelies "Anne" Marie Frank (1929 - 1945) is one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust.  Her diary has been the basis for several plays and films.  She lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.  Born a German national, Frank lost her citizenship in 1941. She gained international fame posthumously after her diary was published.  It documents her experiences hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II.  As persecutions of the Jewish population increased in July 1942, the family went into hiding in the hidden rooms of Anne's father, Otto Frank's, office building.  After two years, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps.  Anne Frank and her sister, Margot, were eventually transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they died of typhus in March 1945.

Mahatma Gandhi
political leader

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869 - 1948), commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was the preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India.  Employing non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights and freedom across the world.  His chief political enemy in Britain was Winston Churchill, who ridiculed him as a half-naked fakir.  He was a dedicated vegetarian, and undertook long fasts as means of both self-purification and political mobilization.  In his last year, unhappy at the partition of India, Gandhi worked to stop the carnage between Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs that raged in the border area between India and Pakistan.  He was assassinated on 30 January 1948.

Kurt Cobain
musician

Kurt Donald Cobain (1967 - 1994) was an American musician and artist, best known as the lead singer, guitarist and primary songwriter of the grunge band Nirvana.  The band found breakthrough success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from its second album Nevermind (1991).  Following the success of Nevermind, Nirvana was labeled "the flagship band" of Generation X, and Cobain hailed as "the spokesman of a generation".  During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with heroin addiction, illness and depression.  On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle, the victim of what was officially ruled a suicide by a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.  The circumstances of his death at age 27 have become a topic of public fascination and debate.
