Thomas Sean Connery was born on 25 August, 1930 in the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh, Scotland to Joseph Connery, a factory worker and lorry driver, and his wife Euphemia (better known as Effie), a cleaner. He was named Thomas after his paternal grandfather.

After leaving school, Connery got a job as a milkman in the local Co-Operative Society, before signing up to join the Royal Navy. Unfortunately, he was discharged after three years due to a stomach ulcer, and briefly went back to working as a milkman.

During his years in the Navy, he got two tattoos: one that reads 'Mum & Dad', and another that reads 'Scotland Forever'.

After he left the Navy, it seemed as if Connery was destined for a life of hard work in dead-end jobs. Among other things, he worked as a lorry driver, a lifeguard, a labourer and a coffin-polisher. He also (thanks to his athletic, highly-toned physique) landed a job as an artist's model at the Edinburgh College of Art.

Connery had been a bodybuilder since the age of 18, and - armed only with a pair of swimming trunks and some body oils - placed third in the tall men's division of the 1953 Mr. Universe compeition. The event turned into a something of a crossroads for Connery. Another competitor, Johnny Isaacs, suggested that Connery should attend a casting for a stage production of South Pacific, and at that point his acting career was born.

After picking up minor roles in various films and TV shows, Connery finally gained a lead when he was cast as Michael McBride in Walt Disney's Darby O'Gill and the Little People - a 1959 film about a wily Irishman engaged in a battle of wits with some mischievous leprechauns.

Two years later, he co-starred with Claire Bloom in a BBC television production of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina.

In 1962, Connery married actress and author Diane Cilento. The couple had one son together, Jason, in 1963, and divorced in 1973.

As well as his marriage, 1962 gave Connery another reason to celebrate: he was cast in the role that made him famous - that of British secret agent James Bond in the first big screen adaptation of Ian Fleming's novels. Connery was plucked from obscurity by producer Harry Saltzman, after the likes of Cary Grant, James Mason and David Niven all turned down the role.

Bond creator Fleming initially considered Connery too 'unrefined' to play the sophisticated spy, prompting the film's director Terence Young to teach the Scot how to walk, talk and eat like a 'gentleman'. Fleming was eventually won over by his leading man's performance, and for many Connery's is still the definitive portrayal of James Bond.

As the Bond films' popularity increased, Connery continued to make the role his own. And it wasn't just the Scotsman's profile that was skyrocketing - the 007 films kept on becoming more and more high budget affairs, with his third outing as Bond, Goldfinger, having a budget equal to that of the two preceding films combined.

Fearing he would be typecast and complaining of repetitive plotlines, Connery decided to quit the Bond character after 1967's You Only Live Twice. He was replaced by George Lazenby for 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but the Australian actor only lasted one film, prompting United Artists to tempt Connery back to the role for 1971's Diamonds Are Forever with a record-breaking salary of £1.5million (which would equate to in excess of US$32million in today's money).

Diamonds would mark Connery's final official appearance as Bond, but he did reprise the role in 1984's non-canonical Thunderball remake Never Say Never Again.

Despite his fear of being typecast, Connery managed to carve out a highly successful acting career after departing the Bond series. During the 1970s he appeared in classic films including The Man Who Would Be King and Murder on The Orient Express, and starred alongside the likes of Sir Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogard, James Caan and Michael Caine in Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far.

The 1970s saw big changes in other aspects of Connery's life. After a long and bitter divorce from his first wife, he was married for a second time to French artist Micheline Roquebrune in 1975. The couple are still together today.

Despite being one of the most widely-recognized film actors on the planet, it wasn't until 1988 that Connery received recognition from the Academy. He won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his turn in cop drama The Untouchables - the only time he's even been nominated.

One of his biggest post-Bond box office successes came in 1989, when he played the eponymous hero's father in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - despite only being 12 years older than leading man Harrison Ford. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were desperate for Connery to take the role as the Indiana Jones series had been heavily inspired by his take on James Bond.

Despite having not been resident in his homeland for some time, Connery has been a vocal supporter of the Scottish National Party, and has stated he believes he'll see a fully independent Scotland within his lifetime. He supported the party financially, until the British Parliament passed a law prohibiting overseas funding of political activities in the UK in 2001.

Connery finally became Sir Sean when he received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. He had been nominated in 1997 and 1998 and, while some claim the delay was down to his Scottish nationalist beliefs, others state that it was because of comments he'd made apparently condoning violence towards women.

The 2000's saw Connery make two of his more regrettable career decisions. The first saw him turn down the part of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings films, ostensibly because he 'didn't understand the script'. It was reported that he was offered around 15% of the JRR Tolkein adaptation's box office receipts for the role, a deal which could have seen him earn as much as $400million. In an attempt to learn from his mistake, Connery decided to accept another role he didn't 'understand': the lead in comic book adaptation The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The production process was notoriously chaotic and the film received lukewarm reviews, causing Connery to become disillusioned with the industry and prompting his retirement from filmmaking.
