thanks as ever, lorenz. an aside, is it true that all our pets have to go when there's someone on chemo?
Not necessarily true, so long as the pets are vaccinated and free of kennel cough. Since your sister will be undergoing aggressive chemoradiation, which will target fast growing tissues such as cancer cells, bone marrow cells etc. Bone marrow cells are the source of red blood cells and white blood cells. so, since she will have a deficiency of blood cells (white and red) this is called Pancytopenia (total decrease in blood cells). Since she will have decreased white blood cells, she will be immunocompromised, so she will be susceptible to pathogens. She must rest at home, in a clean and sterile environment, reduce interaction with people who are sick.
If your pets are vaccinated and healthy, then they might be of therapeutic use. I have treated cancer patients who were undergoing chemoradiation and they kept their dogs and cats with them. it helped them cope, and helped them reduce their stress. provided comfort as well.
That said, just make sure the kitties and doggies are vaccinated, Tita.
Will be praying for your sister.
Regards,
