Expats in Bohol
« on: April 25, 2007, 07:48:50 PM »
Written by Brian Luce

I’ve never thought the word “Expatriate” was a good word to describe an American living overseas. It sounds like “Ex-patriot”, someone who’s lost his patriotism and has become unpatriotic—and for an American living under the imperial presidency of GW Bush, that’s a frightening label.

Although I don’t like the word, I do like what it implies—or use to imply at least. Expatriate suggests a Bohemian world of Hemingway and bullfighting or even an aristocratic villain from a 007 movie living in a far-flung mountaintop fortress in the Austrian Alps. Sadly the reality of Expat living is less glamorous. Generally, one doesn’t meet many Bohemian Artists, Hemingways, or Bond Villains. The typical Expat profile is more likely to be a beer guzzling, self-indulgent, sun burnt lout. The drunken lout is the last stage of an unraveling process that results from too much free time, too much liquor, and not enough to do.

To be fair, as with any generalization, there are some wonderful exceptions to this trend. Individuals of remarkable accomplishment are among the dried dead leaves of the Expat community. Such individuals flourish and succeed in the warm and hospitable culture of Bohol. The balmy climate is a great incubator for ideas, goals, any type of creative plan.

I’ve found the best way to avoid the negative trappings of Expatriate living is to understand, accept, and hopefully embrace cultural differences rather than despise them. Growing up in Los Angeles, California I had a leg up—as LA is the most culturally diverse places on the planet. In LA, intolerance is dangerous and can lead to AISS (Acute Ice pick in Skull Syndrome).

Expat communities often become insular. Frustrations over cultural differences are first shared, expanded, and reinforced. This is why Expats need to socialize with Filipinos–Filipinos other than the compulsory stuff associated with their spouses’ immediate family.

Fortunately, Bohol has numerous organizations with foreign and local membership. Such organizations are important in breaking down the walls Expats tend to build between themselves and their host country.

Its hard to live in ither countries because we need to integrate and its more hard if they're not english speaking country and they have as double as diificult language to learn.

But we, filipinos are a good host, we want everyone to feel at home  ;D

I'm proud to be a Filipino, and to be a Boholana  :)

What amazes me is the people here gloat about how proud they are to be a native from here? but, they marry outside their race to get away from the place? ::)
So they are not that proud after all?

Most marry for this one $$$$$ and are hoping for greener pastures from the other side of the fence with their new husband.

Most women who get married here to foreigners have a high rate of divorce after they have a new country citizenship and remarry again in the same country.

Allot of foreigner men come up to me and we laugh together as they tell me how unfaithful their being to their Philippine wives here.

The reason for it is because they are having a boring time here compared to the fast paced life back home.
The Philippine wife is fine with it for me "No Way"!
The foreign husband gets here and he pays for everyone in her family and it is not practiced in our place to get married and be the bread winner for Uncle Joe, Aunt sue, cousin Billy Bob, and the family pet pig.

I am telling you Philippine ladies if you want to lose your foreigner man just keep on washing his pocket book out supporting people he barely knows in your family.
It upsets them but they are too nice to say anything to you about it. So if your happy using a foreigner husband as an ATM machine then I guess it makes sense why you ladies allow these guys to be unfaithful towards you because you hold the legal banking card!

I also notice the Philippine woman married to a Westerner or other white foreigner man here is also changing her style of dress from conservative to non conservative?
She wears more richer threads then a Philippine woman married to her own native race.

I will not change for anyone I do not care what the style of the country is I will respect but not change it or myself
I would never marry to change my status in fact poor men have character and are rich in heart and rich men have everything and they never seem content!  >:( JUST BE YOURSELF AND ACCEPT YOU FOR :)  HOW YOU REALLY ARE DO NOT DO IT FOR OTHERS DO IT FOR YOURSELF PEOPLE!) :D

Its true, I've seen and heard some doing that here too.. Married for citizenship and or for money, perio for me its not a wise decision... When marrying, marry for love, so the marriage will become worthful and wonderful to live everyday of our life..

When we married outside our race, it doesn't mean that we are not really proud sa atong country.. And not all married for money and new citizenship, we don't know kung unsa ang ila reason behind it all, its their choice.. We filipinos, or whatever race we have, anyone that comes from different country, wherever we go and no matter how long we live in other country and no matter how many citizenship we are holding and no matter how many passport we have, we are still we are.. Filipinos will be a filipino, no matter asa man kita mga padpad.. So dapat lang nga proud gihapon even wala naminyo sa kapwa pilipino.

Nakita ko Kailangan kita nga movie last night on a DVD, what caught me jud is what Aga says nga, american citizen lagi kuno siya pero dili jud kuno siya mamahimong americano... tinuod jud na!

I will not change for anyone I do not care what the style of the country is I will respect but not change it or myself
I would never marry to change my status in fact poor men have character and are rich in heart and rich men have everything and they never seem content!   JUST BE YOURSELF AND ACCEPT YOU FOR   HOW YOU REALLY ARE DO NOT DO IT FOR OTHERS DO IT FOR YOURSELF PEOPLE!)

Kikay ko sa una, kikay lang gihapon ko karon, my husband loves me with my big tummy and bilbil lol, dark skin and natural me, dili man gani ko kamao mang make up, no lipstick, manlipstick lang kung nay occasion nga sama sa kasal, but other than that, wala... I'm really staying for what I am.
And wala man sab kwarta ako bana nga ako ipadala or gamiton para sa amo, we work for it together..

Thats right ?  kanya kanya kapalaran lang na.  Kung happy kayo and not happy life must go on.  At least you  experience life outside and inside the country.  When  you are there try to live a happy life and when you are here , same kahit good or bad thats life....must go on.  Pero siempre dito sa pinas.. pera ang kulang pero simple life lang, pag alang pera, magutang, pag alang bugas, mangayo sa mga relatives or friends.  Pero ok pa rin. Magsipag at tiyaga kalang buhay ka.  Hindi ko lang alam outside the country how life if you have no money since puede ka rin bang manghiram at manghingi sa mga kapitbahay mo siguro yon ang and difference doon no?
yon lang sa pinas hindi ka puede mg apply ng credit card pag hindi malaki sahod mo but in other countries madali ang credit card diyan.  Anyway, GOD bless and goodluck mga taga abroad.

diri dili jud pwede mangutang ug mangayo sa silingan kay wala man gani mi kaila sa among silingan. Permi man serado amo pultahan, kay permi man sab serado ilaha, sak-on pa lang unya k******n kung ablihan nga wala ka kaila sa mga silingan. Kung wala intawon kwarta, adto mamaylo sa guinikanan, dili man pwede mangayo kay wala man daw free diri. Or kundili credit card lagi.

Anyway, GOD bless and goodluck mga taga abroad.

Salamat Ogie... God bless you too  :)

I think the generalisations stated in the OP don't hold any water - IF - you associate with the right kind of people.  i.e. give no time to standbys and pick your friends accordingly.  Even my hubag amigos have a decent work ethic.  Therefore - nothing to complain about and no drain on the wallet  8)  - less chance of becoming a cynical, cloistered expat.

I would never have known there are expats in this forum had the administrator or some moderators not identified them primarily because other native Boholano members were replying to posts in bilingual or in pure Boholano (as is the penchant of most Filipinos). Were it not for the language, I wouldn't care either.

I am sure it doesn't really matter whom were talking with--Boholanos and non-Boholanos alike are welcome to the discussion. Our thoughts and opinions--our inner selves--do not have skin color. Although some of the exchanges heat up to temperatures higher than Bohol's peak, I am glad that people have so far avoided bringing down such debates to facile generalizations bordering on racism. I am amazed by the absence of insularity among such island people. Kudos to Boholanos!

I therefore feel disconcerted by this post. This shouldn't really affect me because after all, I did not marry outside my race and my dreams are not $-denominated. Definitely, you're not talking about me. I wonder if the other TB members feel alluded to???

Still, I find the generalizations about the people of Bohol very simplistic, if not outright insulting. I am sure that in any society--even in those we call first-world like US, Japan or Europe, and not only in Bohol--you'll see nothing but dregs if you choose to settle there. While your awareness of the social condition of Bohol is admirable, I believe you should balance it with exposure to the less degenerate circles.

I really wish for you to have a happy life in Bohol, so move on to better company. Cheers and God bless you!

True of countries that have had empires, but there are examples of others.  Singapore (through trade), Ireland (triggered by EU charity, but now doing fine in its own right), Iceland (natural resources), Thailand's not so bad (you know more about that than me) - many that have found ways other than subjugating their fellow man.

Maybe instead of trumpeting to the world, "I am an American", or "I am a Filipino", creating separation. We should recognise the sameness.
Totally agree.  Nationalism brings with it a huge amount of problems.  Not just saying that because I'm a foreigner - and afraid to be lynched by the Philippine equivalent to the KKK, if that ever would exist.
Theory:
In future nations will be effectively replaced by cultural blocs.  You can see that happening already with the European Union, for example.  They're a liberal version of the Holy Roman Empire of medieval times.  They won't let Turkey join despite being in Europe geographically because of strong cultural differences.
Who would the Phillipines join with?  Perhaps Japan is the closest match in this region - though still a world apart in comparison to, say, france and germany.

Ben, thousands of Filipino women were raped by Japanese soldiers and thousands of Filipino babies during World War II were murdered by Japanese soldiers for fun.

Philippines may join with South Korea or Thailand or Singapore.

I'm aware of that, but look at how the Germanic nations acted in WW2 - and they're now friends with their one-time enemies.  Took a while - you can't damn a people permanently because of their ancestors' misdeeds.
Strange thing about ASEAN is that the cultures within it are so diverse.  How can there be true union?

I may not be married but I think, I have the right to say a word in behalf of the Philippine women being criticized for marrying the outside race for the reason of $$$.

That's not what I observed with my Filipina friends with their non-Filipino husbands. If they allow their money to be spend in feeding their wives' family, it's mainly because they understand how hard life is in the Phils. I don't think, the wives just get the money without their husbands permission. And as I have observed, most of the Filipinas here are working like dogs to support their families in the Phils. They still have prides, even if there husbands insist on helping.

Korek! Ginger :)

No one has the right to judge anyone, especially if this person doesn't know the reason behind it all, and how we live our lives abroad.

Your above-quoted statements Miss PreciousNpolite makes your personality "WORTHLESS".  It is not Ladylike!!!.  Who are you by the way, to make such judgement and you generalized all Filipinas in such a way?  It is not your business to give some comments to persons whom you don't really know why their marriage ended to divorce.  I doubt, you are not aware to the fact that numbers of those criticized women are really working hard to support their Families left behind not getting any single cent from their so-called $$$$ allien men. It is all rubish.  Expressing many words of attacks might only come from a loser expats. So what if a woman after divorced get married 10 times? She has the right to do what she wants of her life....it is her freedom!  To intervene any lifes decision is a violation of  humans dignity and rights.
Personally, I am not mortally offended but I am voicing out to those speechless and not guilty and subjected to condemnation - POOR HOT OF $$$$$$$$$$$ LADIES!  :P

it's unfair to generalize everyone. having a westerner doesnt mean you love less your country or doesnt at all. can you teach your heart who to love? after all we are one family in this world. its not about race, color or whatever you call, it's about being with someone who you trully care and vice versa. if one chooses to go behind the backs of their westerner partners or dig drain their pockets, it's their making not ours. and excuse me, we are working our *** out too for our family.

if the change is for the better, why stop them? if those girls feel good about the change, why not? dont we deserve something good? a little bit of spa and nice dress? arent you happy those girls look lovely than before? if its something good for yourself and your partner is happy about it, why not? some are just so hypocrite to accept that we all love a little bit of treatment and pampering. whilst, if you dont need the change, why change too? afterall Filipinas are lovely inside and out.

and hello... westerners should have known the fact that Filipinos are family oriented and even if you marry a Filipino you still would help out your family in need, its not an obligation but an act of kindness and gratitude. makaako kag tan aw sa imong family nga nanginahanglan samtang ikaw nagpakabusog. a little help wouldnt hurt and the blessings will come back to you many folds. that's the sentiment of a true filipino. ayaw lang sad abusohi ang kaayo sa uban, dont ever bite the hands that feed you.

ayaw sad pagpakaaron ingnon kunohay nga di na molingi sa imong pamilya kumo nakabana og foreigner...kana maoy hypocrite!

Korek! never generalize if you/we describe a people on that country or that race, because every individual is different.

Just like when, describing bad to bohol police hehe, tanan police damay hasta ang maayo diba?

You know what?...I was just very much upset of her written analysis and she degraded and generalized all.  Why and as to what reasons those men intended/preferred more our ladies?  We are poor but at least we have character.  So what if we help our Families?.....we work for it and that we are very proud of.

Didn't anyone or  anybody dared to kick her ass out of Bohol???

Why did she stay there?

Is it because she cant afford to live like she is on a vacation  in her country???

Is she a citizen there in the first place???
