The employment opportunities for Filipinos expatriates remain secure despite the global financial crisis, even as the government continues to identify and develop new labor markets abroad, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said today.

In her speech at the closing session of the 34th Philippine Business Conference (PBC) and Expo this morning (Wednesday) at the Manila Hotel, the President said the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has reported that so far there has been no “displacements of expatriates related to the financial crisis.”

The President said that Filipino expatriates such as teachers, nurses, caregivers and IT-related workers are insulated “even if the US economy worsens.”

She pointed out that the “enrolment of two million expats in the Middle East remains secure. The employment of 500,000 expats in Europe is also secure and stable so far. And aside from the booming Middle East market, overseas employment opportunities are emerging in other expatriate markets.”

She said that aside from the booming Middle East market, employment opportunities for Filipinos are also emerging in such countries as Canada and Australia, each of which is expected to open 30,000 job opportunities in the next two years, and New Zealand, 10,000.

The President added that another 20,000 jobs would be available to Filipinos starting in 2010 when the US naval base in Okinawa begins transferring to Guam.

In any case, the President assured that the government would not be caught flatfooted without contingency plans for Filipino overseas workers in the midst of the uncertainties arising from the global crisis. - PNA
