UK to Investment in School Buildings
« on: July 11, 2010, 12:28:49 PM »
Education Secretary Michael Gove says the government will "continue to invest in school buildings" despite cancelling Labour's £55bn redevelopment programme.

Writing in the Sunday Express, he also said ministers "hope to help people in all those areas who feel disappointed now" by the loss of rebuilding funds.

More than 700 school revamps which had been scheduled will not go ahead.

Shadow Education Secretary Ed Balls said the cuts were "madness", as he launched a "Save our Schools" campaign.

The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme was cancelled last week, but Mr Gove was forced to apologise in the Commons after admitting 25 mistakes were made in the announcement.

It meant that some schools thought they had escaped the axe, only to learn later that they would miss out. Mr Gove has also promised to visit each of those schools to apologise in person. - BBC Online
