Switzerland on Wednesday said that it will continue to work closely with the Counter- Terrorism Implementation Task Force (CTITF), a UN body that works to help member states address terrorist threats.
"An effective global counter-terrorism program must focus on non-military tools," said the UN ambassador of Switzerland, Jurg Lindenmann, at a General Assembly meeting to review the UN strategy to fight terrorism. The ambassador is the Swiss coordinator of the fight against terrorism.
Lindenmann noted that all four pillars of the Strategy, a plan adopted by the CTITF in 2006 to help member states address terrorist threats which include capacity-building, law enforcement cooperation and dealing with the underlying societal and political conditions that are conducive to the spread of terrorism, needed to be implemented.
"The Strategy remains the foundation of the UN Counter- Terrorism Program," the ambassador said.
Lindenmann recommended that the CTITF needed to be " continuously provided with an appropriate level of resources, in particular through the regular budget."
Switzerland has supported several activities of the CTITF and its working groups during the last four years. - pna
