Malapropisms
« on: August 17, 2012, 01:13:35 AM »
A malapropism is the misuse of similar sounding words, especially with humorous results.

***

An instance of mis-speech is called a malapropism when:

    1) The word or phrase means something different from the word the speaker or writer intended to use.

    2) The word or phrase sounds similar to what was intended. For example, using obtuse (wide or dull) instead of acute (narrow or sharp) is not a malapropism; using obtuse (stupid or slow-witted) when one means abstruse (esoteric or difficult to understand) is.

    3) The resulting utterance is nonsense.

malapropism has spawned its own "categories" of other language -isms, usually attributed to the persons who commit them.  the famous ones:

goldwynism - samuel goldwyn, movie producer

yogiism - yogi bera, american sports legend

bushism - george bush, father and son, former u.s. presidents

I’m never going to write my autobiography as long as I live.

I’m willing to admit that I may not always be right, but I am never wrong.

I'll give you a definite maybe.

I had a monumental idea this morning, but I didn't like it.

In this business it's dog eat dog, and nobody's gonna eat me.

It ain't over 'til it's over.

I usually take a two-hour nap from one to four.

When you come to a fork in the road....take it.

I didn't really say everything I said.

You can observe a lot by watching.

The future ain't what it used to be.

It gets late early out here.

If the world were perfect, it wouldn't be.
