About two million books donated by the United States government are now being readied for distribution to the different schools and other learning institutions in Mindanao.
US Ambassador to the Philippinesp Kristy Kenny said that the program, which has a total funding of US$ 480 million, will be implemented under the Education, Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills Program until 2011.
To date, Ambassador Kenny said, more than 250,000 books have already distributed to the school children in the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
Kenny arrived here last week to see for her self the situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the evacuation centers in Datu Odin Sinsuat town.
During the visit, the ambassador also announced that the US government is providing $ 2.5 million in assistance to individuals and families displaced by tragic outbreak of violent conflict in Mindanao.
It includes 1,480 metric tons of U.S rice, valued at approximately $ 2 million, for free distribution by the United Nations World Food Program, as well as water, health, and sanitation support by non-governmental organization partners.
“My thoughts are with those who have been displaced by fighting, people whose lives have been lost and disrupted,†said Kenny.
“Working together, we can help Mindanao move toward peace and prosperity, so citizens of Mindanao-especially the children-may have the future they deserve,†she added. source: PNA
