More technical-vocational scholarships await high school graduates of Cebu after the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) gave P5 million to the province under its Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP).

TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva revealed on Tuesday that he approved the grant of P5 million worth of scholarships to Cebu to help poor high school graduates and promote technical-vocational courses in the area.

The scholarships will include courses in commercial cooking, housekeeping, food and beverage, welding, machining, and refrigeration and air-conditioning. The training will be provided by the University of the Visayas and Regional Training Center.

Aside from this, TESDA has also forged a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Cebu City government and a division of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Cebu to carry out the grant of scholarships to deserving high school graduates through the “Cebu City Government College Scholarship Program.”

The MOA offers as much as P20,000 financial assistance to qualified applicants.

“We want to prioritize the Cebuanos,” Villanueva said. “The amount of money we allocated for scholarships for the province will be used until the end of this year.”

Citing statistics, the TESDA chief noted that around 80%-85% of high school graduates from public schools in Cebu City have no opportunity to proceed to college education because of their family’s fiscal limitation.

“The Cebu City government is eager to grant scholarships to deserving students who cannot afford tertiary education, as they hope to make them become life-long learners and productive members of society,” said Villanueva.

“Of course TESDA will be more than willing to extend to them all the help they need in order for them to realize their goal,” he added.

Based on the MOA, the Cebu City government will allocate funds sufficient for all the scholars’ training fee, miscellaneous and other fees for technical-vocational short term courses.

Specifically, the Cebu City government will grant a maximum of P10,000 for graduates of high schools located in the urban area of Cebu City while a maximum of P20,000 will be given to graduates from high schools located in the mountain area of Cebu.

The DepEd-Cebu will be responsible for the dissemination of information regarding the program and the issuance of guidelines for the selection of deserving public high school graduates based on the MOA while TESDA is prepared to give education and trainings on 13 courses, namely: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) NC I, Building Wiring NC II; Ref. and Aircon Servicing NC I, Plumbing NC I, Machining NC II, Computer Aided Design, Consumer Electronics Servicing, Household Service Worker NC II, Automotive Servicing NC I, NC II, and NC III, and Dressmaking NC II.

Villanueva said 124 high school graduates have already availed of the scholarships under the “Cebu City Government College Scholarship Program."

Of the 124 scholars, he said, 38 took SMAW NC I; 29 took Automotive Servicing NC II; 17 took Dressmaking NC II; 16 took Household Service Worker NC II; nine took Ref. and Aircon Servicing NC I; nine took Building Wiring NC II; and six took Machining NC II. - source: PNA
