Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza said the establishment of a Pangasinan State University (PSU) branch in his city was a wise move because it benefited students from poor families to acquire tertiary- level education at affordable cost.
This was the single element or factor that outweighed all other considerations which influenced the decision of the Alaminos City government6 to put up the PSU campus in Alaminos City.
He cited statistics showing that 90 percent of high school graduates in Alaminos City are unable to pursue college education because of poverty.
Braganza said even a private school owned by his family, the Great Plebian College, had to make a supreme sacrifice by losing enrollees when PSU campus in Alaminos was established.
He expressed his appreciation to his fellow officials of Alaminos City for having the same motivation –- education of the youth-– to exert the most marked influence in their decision to support what was a most noble undertaking.
Braganza bewailed that instead of being supportive and appreciative of the initiatives to make quality education accessible and affordable to students, the president of a private college in Alaminos City has been maligning the city government.
Braganza reiterated his earlier statement that he intends to sue PASS College President Ruben Morante for insinuating in another press forum that anomalies attended to the establishmernt of the PSU campus in Alaminos.
The campus was put up by virtue of a cost-sharing agreement executed between PSU, whose main campus is located in Lingayen, and the Local Government of Alaminos City.
Leaders of non-government agencies hailed Mayor Braganza’s move to file charges against Morante for publicly accusing him (Braganza) of committing anomalous transaction along with PSU in establishing the Alaminos City campus.
"We will definitely sue him," said Braganza of Morante as he reiterated that there was no illegal move committed whatsoever in the establishment of the campus.
The mayor said that since the avowed mission of his (Morante's school is the education of the youth, it is ironic therefore that Morante is now perceived as an impediment to the realization of the mission of the PSU campus. (PNA)
