LOWER COLLEGE ENROLLMENT IMPACT OF SENIOR HIGH TO LAST UP TO 5 YEARS - BELARO

Senior high school-induced low enrollment will continue to affect colleges and universities nationwide for the next three to four academic years, according to 1-Ang Edukasyon party-list Representative Salvador Belaro, Jr.

"Low freshman enrollment in this school year will carryover to the next year when the freshmen become sophomores and so on until this year's freshmen graduate from their four-year and five-year courses," Belaro explained on Friday.

Many colleges and universities were able to cushion the financial impact of the enrollment drop by offering senior high school (SHS), Belaro noted.

"Contrary to fears that SHS will cause many youth to drop out of school, enrollment in Grade 11 reached about 1.5 million and a good chunk of them chose SHS offered in colleges and universities," the House assistant majority leader said.

This summer, the Department of Education has scheduled the mass training of public school teachers who will handle Grade 6 and Grade 12 levels.

Belaro also said college freshman enrollment will still be low next school year because there is still Grade 12 of SHS rolling out in June. "That enrollment dip will also carryover through the next four to five years."

He added that a growing number of colleges and universities are moving the start of their school year to August but most higher education institutions still have June as their opening month.

Belaro is the author of House Bill 4044 which seeks to establish a standard academic calendar for all education levels nationwide. (END)

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
