VALEDICTORIAN, SALUTATORIAN HONORS REPLACED; FEWER COLLEGE FRESHMEN AGAIN IN JUNE-AUGUST

Freshman college enrolment next June to August will still be low like last year because of the phase-in of senior high school, 1-Ang Edukasyon party-list Congressman Salvador Belaro, Jr. said on Saturday.

Also because of changes arising from the Kindergarten to Grade 12 new curriculum, the graduation honors familiar to many like valedictorian and salutatorian are no more.

"Highest Honors" replace first honors or valedictorian or first honors and "High Honors" takes the place of second honors or salutatorian.

Unlike before when there is only one valedictorian, now there can be several students with "Highest Honors" because students who earn final grades of 98 to 100 get to receive "Highest Honors," Belaro said, referring to the DepEd Order on the new grading system.

Students who earn 95 to 97 final grade receive "High Honors", while students who reap 90 to 94 get "Honors".

The Department of Education phased-in senior high school for most schools last June 2016 with Grade 11.

"With Grade 12 introduction this year for most schools nationwide, colleges and universities will endure low freshman numbers for a second year and the impact of SHS on college enrolment will be felt over the next four to five years, Belaro said.

The House Assistant Majority Leader also said fewer college freshmen means the free college tuition plan of the Duterte administration and Commission on Higher Education "will not be too heavy a strain on the national budget."

Those who will enroll as college freshmen next school year will come from schools that have had kindergarten and 12 years of basic education before June 2016. (END)
Romans 10:9-10
"If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."
