MANILA – Students from the Philippines won a total of 745 medals and trophies in various math competitions abroad in 2013, the highest since 1996.

According to the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), the medal haul consists of 120 gold medals or trophies, 273 silver medals or trophies, and 352 medals or trophies in ten international math contests.

“This is the biggest medal haul of the Philippines since 1996,” MTG president Dr. Simon Chua said in a statement released Thursday.

It was 1996 when MTG started sending Filipino students to math contests abroad.

Last year, the group sent Filipino delegates to math contests in Bulgaria, China, Turkey, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

“Despite our meager resources, we continue to train Filipino students for international math contests. We surpassed our goals last year and we hope that we will continue our success this year,” Chua said.

In 2012, the Philippines won a total of 183 medals in math contests abroad.
