Children with heavy school bags face risk of back pain
« on: March 19, 2012, 08:32:25 AM »
Children with heavy school bags are facing a higher risk of back pain, a latest study revealed.

A team of Spanish researches reported that the link was found in more than 1,400 school children aged between 12 and 17 in Northern Galicia, Spain, according to a report on the British journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.

The pupils were split into four groups based on the weight of their bags. Those in the group with the heaviest bags had a 50-percent higher risk of back pain, and a 42-percent higher risk of back pathology, compared with the group with the lightest bags.

A common back pathology in pupils is scoliosis, which is an abnormal curvature of the spine.

"The results obtained have strong implications," co-author of the study, Professor Alberto Ruano, of the Unviersity of Santiago de Compostel in Spain said in the journal.

"We strongly encourage the medical and educational community to start advising parents and school children about the risk posed by heavy school bags and the fact that this risk can be easily reduced," he added. - PNA

John 3:16-18 ESV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

drat.  i have scoliosis and it's given me trouble all these years.  it's no joke.  there are times when i couldn't bend at all and getting up from bed after a night's sleep requires too much ceremony.  and i was advised against playing bowling; i had to let go of my bowling set of ball, bag and shoes, never mind that a doctor said that i lost about 2 inches of my supposed full height potential.  let's spare our kids from this malady, please.

Senate bill seeks to ban 'overloading' of school bags
September 27, 2010 5:43pm

Senator Lito Lapid has filed a bill that would limit the weight of bags being carried by children to school, pointing out that 'overloaded' school bags are harmful to the students' health and their education.

In filing Senate Bill 2179, Lapid noted that the heavy weight of school bags is harmful to the body of the students.

"At a glimpse, it seems this practice is good to schoolchildren (but) overloading of school bags can cause side effect to the body of the children... since spinal ligaments and muscles are not fully developed until after 16 years of life," Lapid said in his bill.

Citing data from the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Free State, he said children who carry heavy bags everyday might have trouble maintaining proper standing posture and might even experience back pains and spinal complications.

He said carrying such heavy loads might also cause "chronic, low-level trauma" which can result in chronic shoulder, neck, and back pain for the children.

"Education is futile if the frail bodies of children are compromised... having pupils carry heavy load to school will be counter-productive, with many of them physically deformed as adults," he said.

Lapid said the measure aims to inform school administrators, teachers, parents, and school children of this "unhealthful practice." The proposal was forwarded to the committees on finance; arts and culture; and health and demography last week.

Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, however, said that there was no need for a law or a memorandum that would limit the weight of school bags. He said school officials can just look into the issue themselves.

But Lapid maintained that his proposal was just a suggestion. — Kimberly Tan/RSJ/KBK, GMANews.TV

hey, bro, in case you didn't know (hampasabol!), the weight of schoolbags is due to the required books of the education department, written by people known to the department.  this is a practice since methusela.  it means money.  like those insurance companies lucky enough to be chosen by the gods, authorship of books sold directly to the government through the education department is also for those who know the gods.
