The Cebu City Council has passed an ordinance establishing the Cebu City College and allocating funds for the institution of higher learning that will cater to the “poor but deserving constituents of Cebu City.â€
The ordinance was filed by Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young and was co-authored by Councilors Rodrigo Abellanosa, Margarita Osmena, Alvin Dizon and Ronald Cuenco.
The newly-approved ordinance states that the City Government will need an initial appropriation of P5 million to start the college.
Once operational, the college will derive its funds from tuition and miscellaneous fees, the City Government, National government or its agencies, foreign governments, private persons, private organizations and institutions and such other sources that are not prohibited by law.
The ordinance will take effect 15 days after its publication in a newspaper of general circulation.
Based on the ordinance, the new Cebu City College will absorb the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program offered by the Cebu City Medical Center-College of Nursing in consortium with the Cebu Technological University.
It will also offer courses that are recognized by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
The operations of the college will be overseen by a governing body, which will be composed of Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, a college president who will be appointed, chairman of the City Council’s committee on education, head of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) 7, head of the Department of Education-Cebu City Division, Cebu provincial director of TESDA and three representatives from the private sector.
