Getting Your Car Ready For Winter Time
« on: October 14, 2008, 10:12:50 AM »
If your car could only speak it would let you know that the winter season may be the one season that it would hate the most. Ice, snow, salt and loose gravel can convert any minor scratches to an assortment of nasty rust spots in no time at all. Car heaters may not be enough during those extremely cold spells to keep the occupants at a comfortable temperature while the vehicles windshield is sure to experience a very bad beating during these bouts with the frigid outdoor temperatures combining with the warmer car interior.

Of major concern and one that you should be continually mindful of is this windshield. If you happen to have a slight crack in your window you can rest assured that by the end of winter that crack will have grown. Water from the snow gets inside it and freezes, as it freezes the crack enlarges. Your windshield was designed to protect the occupants inside the vehicle however under conditions such as these and with a small crack the windshield becomes a dangerous part of your car.

Another major issue that you should be aware of is the fluids within your car such as the brake fluid, engine coolants and transmission levels. Engine coolants are good well below the 0 degree temperature range if it is fresh and working properly. Mixing it with water prevents the freezing of your automobile and protects the engine from this extremely cold weather. Many car owners tend to forget about these fluids during the winter months however they play a great part in the proper functioning of your vehicle and definitely should not be forgotten. In addition as you can readily tell many of the fluids protect various parts of your car during the cold winter months. Lastly you must not forget your car battery as they are a very important aspect needed in order for your car to operate in a safe and reliable manner. Check your battery's charge capacity and recharge it if needed. If it is beyond saving replace it promptly. You would not like it if your battery died on you in the middle of a very bad snow storm.

Checking the usual things one check on their car may not be enough. Sometimes it is the little things that are left unattended that can cause you to have major damage done to your car and cause unnecessary delays. If you know your car very well you can readily diagnosis when it is not functioning at its peak level without ever opening the hood. - by Joseph Paris of http://www.survival-training.info

it would be a great benefit if you put on snow tires, it really makes a difference vs all season tires
