June 2, 2012 Philippine Weather Update - Another province was placed under storm warning signal No. 1 as tropical storm "Ambo" intensified further as it moved toward Aurora province on Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
Lenny Ruiz, weather forecaster, said that as of 4 a.m. Saturday, "Ambo" (international name: Mawar) was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 220 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora (16.1°N, 124.6°E) with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 90 kph.
Ruiz said that storm signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Polillo Island, Aurora and Isabela and is now raised over the Northern Luzon province of Cagayan.
“Residents living in low-lying and mountainous areas under signal No. 1 are alerted against possible flash floods and landslides,†PAGASA said.
It warned fishing boats and other small sea craft against venturing out into the eastern seaboard of Luzon and the Visayas.
Although "Ambo" is not expected to make landfall, strong rains are expected across the country in the next few days as the storm will affect the southwest monsoon or “hanging habagat,†Ruiz added.
Weathermen said that "Ambo," the first tropical cyclone to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in 2012, is expected to exit on Monday.
PAGASA said that some 15 to 25 millimeters of rainfall per hour (heavy) is expected within the 500-km. diameter of the storm and also enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring rains over Central and Southern Luzon and the Visayas.
According to PAGASA, "Ambo" is forecast to move north-northwest at 13 kph and expected to be 240 kms. east-northeast of Aparri, Cagayan by Sunday morning.
By Monday morning, it is expected to be 360 kms. northeast of Basco, Batanes, and 680 kms. northeast of Basco, Batanes by Tuesday morning.
In its advisory, PAGASA said that Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Polilio Island, Aurora, Isabela and Cagayan will experience rains and gusty winds with moderate to rough seas.
The rest of Central and Southern Luzon will have occasional to frequent rains while Visayas and the rest of Northern Luzon will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms. Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, it added.
Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast to northwest will prevail over Northern Luzon and coming from the southwest over the rest of the country.
The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough, PAGASA said.
